-my professor told me my final presentation (which i started and finished the night before it was due) was the best one he has seen so far this semester.

-my 500GB hard drive that mysteriously stopped working, mysteriously started working (???). someday i want some kind of sick RAIDed NAS. any suggestion (dana, andy, tj)?

I'll always think NASes are dumb. Just put hard drives in a cheap/free computer. especially in your house... that way if you want any other server functions, just have one box do everything. It's not like you're an enterprise or something. That old pavilion i had with a 50 watt power supply was perfect for a fileserver/webserver/firewall/router and development. it's small, quiet, and low power. awesome. No matter what NAS or router you buy, it's always just going to be a weird tiny computer, but one that can't do as much cool stuff.

i remember getting comments like that from professors and feeling half proud/half suspicious of the intelligence of people i had been grouped with. something like..."really? minimal effort and i'm still towards the top?"

true.

to be fair, your average compsci student isn't the most charismatic speaker, so it was sort of big fish small pond.

i'd agree with andy, but i'm very dubious of his 50W power supply claim.

if you feel like fucking around, you could probably make something neat with a soekris board or an intel atom based board and throw on freenas

otherwise, i've heard good things about drobo.

also "sick raid" == $$$, lvm or zfs == time
