Hoshino Station
Built by the Keldarin Combine, Hoshino Station orbits the gas giant Hoshi, fifth planet in the Shintaak system. Hoshino Station was originally a refining depot for gases mined from the planet below. Serving as a convenient midpoint along several major interstellar routes, and with a ready supply of fuels compatable with most drive systems, Hoshino soon became a favored stop for freight liners looking to save time by lowmassing1 fuel.
With the freighters came those passengers who either couldn't afford finer acommodations or preferred to travel incognito--the poor and the criminal--who used the refining platform as a waypoint. Over time, some chose to stay, either signing on with the gas miners or carving out a niche providing services to miners and travelers. As the bare ameneties improved, Hoshino became a haven for outlaws and fertile fields for up-and-coming crime syndicates.
But progress marches on; the growing criminal element brought money, and a greater demand for the things money could buy. As those comforts became available, Hoshino became more and more desirable as a destination for legitimate travelers, as well.
In time, the tide of legitimate business overcame both the syndicates and the Keldarins, with resident businessowners buying the station and applying for Federation membership in 35514. Following the buyout, the station underwent the first of seven major construction operations. While the refinery was maintained, the modular living sections and tiny docking ring received a complete overhaul.
Today, Hoshino Station houses more than twenty-five million permanent residents, and at least that many transients. The station provides comfortable living accommodations for a variety of biologies, denoted by sector color. Each is almost a city unto itself, although some sectors are more suitable for certain businesses or station operations.
Blue Sector
Blue sector's atmosphere is a nitrogen/oxygen 70/29 mix, and its gravity is around 1.2 times Earth standard2. The offices of the station magistrate and administrative body are located in Blue Sector.
Yellow Sector
With a chlorine/hydrogen/ammonia 60/24/15 atmosphere and slightly less than double Earth gravity, Yellow Sector's climate is actually caustic to many biologies and certain materials. Protective suits, helmets, and respirators are available for rent at all enterances.
Green Sector
Green Sector is characterized by a methane/carbon dioxide 54/45 atmosphere and .85 Earth gravity popular among several common species of insectoid and reptiliform. The Federation medico complex is located in Green Sector, as are a number of other private medicos who find the low gravity an asset in their work.
Gray Sector
Gray Sector is the province of heavyworlders, with more than six times Earth's gravity and a nitrogen/carbon dioxide/oxygen 60/25/14 atmosphere. Station security, detention, and the sector3 Federation Supreme Court are located in Gray Sector. Protective equippment is available for defendants normally unable to survive gravity of this magnitude. Gray Sector is also significantly warmer than other areas, with an air temperature of 112o F.
White Sector
Located farthest from the planet, White Sector has the lowest gravity with .23 relative to Earth, and houses the station's Transit Authority, docking facilities, and most short-term cargo moving and storage. The atmosphere is a helium/oxygen 60/34 mix. White Sector is also the location of the Hoshino Historical Museum, cataloging the station's origin and history.
Mauve Sector
Mauve Sector is the industrial district, and most of the levels are kept to hard vacuum and null gravity to discourage squatters. The station's gas refineries and the offices for its mining companies can be found in this sector.
Red Sector
Red Sector is the station's worst-kept "dirty little secret." With public areas maintaining a Blue Sector climate, the climate in private quarters is highly customizable. This was originally intended to serve the comfort of short-term guests of the station who could afford the luxury, and one hotel/casino (the Bellagi'uxoton) does welcome high-class clientele, but most of the sector has been claimed by vice trades; prostitution, gas bars, and so forth. Short of a resort like Thal, Hoshino Station's Red Sector or another like it is the most exotic array of pleasures a modern galactipolitan can hope to see.
It should be noted that each Sector is home to no shortage of businesses catering to both locals and tourists. There are also several non-Federation embassies located in the Sectors those beings find most comfortable.
----------
1: Lowmassing is the practice of carrying only enough fuel and/or consumables to power a ship to its next destination. Lower-mass ships can pass closer to gravity wells at luminal speed, and accellerate and decelerate more quickly. The dangers of lowmassing are fairly obvious.
2: Earth standards are not a common measure in the Federation, but are provided to the reader here as a point of reference.
3: Lowercase sector in this instance refers to the surrounding region of Federation space, analogous to a state or province of a planetary government.
