[ If there's one thing that could be said about the planet Persephone it's that it isn't lacking activity. The rich showing off their finery to each other while sipping expensive drinks. The poor scrambling around the lower markets for what bits of anything they can afford. People seemingly always on the move. And it's at one of those marketplaces ( Read more... )

[There's a gangly man in black happily sorting through a pile of what looks to be useless scrap. He's having a little chat with himself as well.]

It's been awhile since I've been to a junkyard... Forgot how fun it could be. This looks--no, wrong size... this might work...

[ She's slowly wandering up on the man, adding the occasional bit of dusty something or other into the basket under her arm. She catches a bit of what he says and smiles. ]

's always fun. Ya just never know what you're gonna find. An' they're always changin' too.

[He looks up from his pile.] That's what I love about places like this. You can find some real gems. Some of my bots were built entirely out of stuff I found lying around a junkyard.

[ She nods. ] All ya gotta do is look. Folk throw away some of the best stuff.

What kind of bots do ya build?

All kinds. Bots to help around the house, war-bots... war-bots mostly. [Normally he would never tell someone that, but he felt safe enough here. Probably because he wasn't on earth at the moment.]

Ya can make lil' bots that'll do the dishes?

... you're fightin' some kinda war?

Yup! [He picks out another interesting piece of scrap.]

[He smiles crookedly.] Heh. ...You could say that. But there are always wars being fought somewhere, and they're going to use my bots.

Cos your bots are the best? A real good deal? [ She smiles and keeps smiling as her eye catches a bit of shiny - literally - near her. ]

They are the best. [And relatively inexpensive, considering.]

...But it helps I don't have much competition on my world. [He admits this grudgingly.]

Figured they had to be since ya know all 'bout workin' with any bit of shiny ya can find. 's better'n someone who'll just go replacin' things just cos a wire got all burnt.

Where's that?

If something won't work just because a wire got messed up, it's not worth much. Good war-bots have got to be able to take a few big hits before they go down... they can't afford to be delicate.

Earth.

[ She nods in agreement. ] But try tellin' that to them that got all the money an' tech. 'specially the Alliance.

... Earth? [ She looked at him in confusion. That was wrong. Really wrong. No one had lived on Earth-that-Was for generations and generations. ]

Alliance? [He's mildly curious.]

[And he completely misinterprets your confusion.] Yeah, we're a real backwater compared to places like this. You can see why just building war-bots automatically makes them top of the line. Not that they wouldn't be the best anyway...

The government folk. [ Seriously. Something was wrong here ... ]

But ... there ain't anyone livin' on Earth-that-Was. Not for a real long time.

Which government? This planet's?

[And. He just stares at you.] Earth-that-Was? What? No, just Earth. There's plenty of people there.

The ... 'Verse's.

H-how come ya don't know one bit 'bout it an' are all tellin' me you're from Earth-that-Was? [ She was seriously starting to think this guy was more than a bit fuzzy in the brainpan. ]
