The Shinra Corporation has been dismantled, Sephiroth has been destroyed, and the Planet is safe. That's right - my 45-hour opus is complete. "Final Fantasy VII" is finished.

I'm such a fucking gamer dork.

I finished FFX (about 60 hours) and then went out and bought FFVII and it was graphics-shock. I couldn't even bring myself to boot it up again. I was spoiled by the incredible cinema scenes in 10.

I know that fans of the Final Fantasy series often argue about X and VII. FFX being, to me anyway, the best game ever of all time, I wanted to finish VII and see both sides. I suppose I should even though I know the story line and all.

But, hey, congrats on finishing it! I know what it's like to complete an epic RPG. Very rewarding and depressing all at the same time.

While FFX certainly steals the show in the visuals department, it can't hold a candle to FFVII in terms of story ( ... )

That's why I wanted to play VII to compare the story lines. If VII touches me like X did (and did it ever), then I'll have a plethora of new tattoos.

As far as RPGs go, the most I played were on the older systems - NES, Sega, etc .. The system that got me hooked was the Commodore 64. Some of the all time best were born there (Phantasie, Questron, Legacy of the Ancients) ... I haven't played a great deal of the 'hack and slash' RPGs because I am old school to the core. I love the chess match type thinking of turn based. Although I have endulged in a few of the button mashing madness. I am slacking big time on the newer sytems. I have well over a dozen for my GBAsp, as portables are ideal for me right now. I am currently hooked on Fire Emblem - The Sacred Stones.

Shoot me an e-mail sometime and we can talk RPGs all day.

I'm sorta with you - i'll always love turn-based RPGs, there's just so much more thought that goes into the gameplay. But at the same time, it can be refreshing to sit down and tear through a good hack-n-slash (Fable, Champions of Norrath, etc). Really depends on what i'm in the mood for.

Also - you want some FF-style gameplay, but with some seriously mature story? Check out Digital Devil Saga. Seriously.

I just started replaying FFVII now that my job is essentially over. It's such a great game (in my opinion, the greatest.) I remember when FFVII had the best graphics anyone had ever seen. BTW, I appreciated your Dylan reference.

Kinda surprised you were able to finish it in 45 hours. The last time I finished VII (finished, that is to say I did everything, including building up Aeris' last limit for the first time) I spent at least 99 hours in the gaming excellence that is FFVII.

Yeh, the first time i played through it, i approached it with a "completist" attitude. I wanted to master every spell, complete every side quest, and all that jazz. I was the same way with pretty much every game i played.

I remember spending hours upon hours with FFVI (back when it was released on SNES as FFIII) making sure that every character learned every single spell. In retrospect, that was fucking retarded, and an enormous waste of time, since half of the characters i never even used.

These days, i may do a few side quests to get some rare items and such, but when i'm playing a game that clocks in at 40 hours or more, i'm pretty much just trying to get it done with and enjoy the story. I have so little time to devote to gaming that i want to squeeze in as much as possible, so i try to rip through them about as fast as i can.

Word.
