"DVD Commentary" on #176: Scars
I'm doing that DVD commentary meme going around, so if there's a prompt you'd like to hear more about, let me know.

Interestingly (I suppose interestingly), this one was a poem in its first draft, because I was toying around with form and blah blah blah. (That draft was only about the first war in heaven, though, with none of the other stuff about scars.) I've been intrigued for a while by what a war between angels would be like, how something like that would take place. Surely not on any scale or in terms we'd understand? I imagined it taking place on both a macro scale, whole star systems under dispute, and on a micro scale as well, like antibodies fighting a virus, in every molecule of the universe. There'd be clashes of purely elemental forces as well as more physical incarnations of the fighting.
Anyway, I messed around with trying to put all of that into blank verse for a while-- not very well, poetry isn't my strong suit-- and then left it for further revision.
Then when the Scars prompt came up I was thinking about how the angels heal and how for all the ridiculous amounts of violence they go through in the movies they don't have any marks of it. The only scar any of them have is of course the brand of their name. But this led back to thoughts of the first war in heaven, and I dug up my poetry attempts and just started taking phrases and bits of ideas to try and give Gabriel's version of that first war. Smooshing two prompts into one, kinda sorta!
I do love playing with language and trying to evoke certain visual moments or scenes with nothing but words, so much of this prompt was just doing that: trying to create the very pretty pictures I could see in my mind's eye. It's probably one of the most lyrical of Gabe's posts, understandable now that I've revealed it started life as a poem.
"Scars have the power to remind their owners that the past was real," is, incidentally, stolen directly from Silence of the Lambs. I steal a lot from that book, here and there.
I think that's about it for that one!
