Gee... Spoilers.
Why the whole series fails in general:
Its not a goddamnned show about characters. There are around 70+ recurring characters throughout the seasons.
And frankly it was advertised and ran on and drew people in with the mysteries. Half of the characters were pretty simple sterotypes or near soap opera worthy tropes. In fact, much of the acting (im looking at you jack) belonged in a soap opera.
They have Official lost theories message boards, played up the numbers, did a whole puzzle in wired magazine in code tied in with the show. The mysteries kept people coming back and its how it was advertised.
So when you leave out most of the mysteries... and want to focus on this great bond of this 70+ cast, You are basically making a different show than you are selling. Bait and switch or what i call "after JJ left they had no idea what to do with the show so they made shit up"
If you want to compare lost to a real Character Driven Mystery story with good questions that dont get answered go see No Country For Old men.
That movie did what Lost claims to have done.
Mysteries Solved:
Now ill give ya this one lost. I at least liked the ONE real mystery solved. The nature of the rules. We establish that the "rules" are made up. Jacob and MIB played by jacobs rules cause he was the "protector" and once jack took that role, they played by his rules. Hense MIB now mortal etc. I got this earlier though with Across the Sea, where young MIB says "one day you can make up a game with your own rules" nice foreshadowing there. its also mentioned with jack punching MIB and then Ben talking to hurley about how things can work different when he's the #1.
I like this cause it makes some kind of sense. But it presents another problem:
The whole good v evil, light v dark theme goes out the window.
Half of that was based on the battle tween jacob and MIB but neither was evil. MIB WAS trapped on the island by his brother, and seemingly for no reason. There was never any evidence he would kill people if released, nothing to even suggest he was ever really a bad guy, just caught in his brothers game. Nothing to suggest he was the MIB for any reason other than in jacobs game he would turn into the smoke monster when entering the light. So to me this makes the whole light v dark theme of the show out of place.
The ending:
Total crap. Total cop out. I see it a little like taking all the chapters outta a book 3/4 through and then leaving the final chapt.
They picked a point, stopped explaining and then cut to everyone being dead wherever in time they happened to die.
The whole flash sideways being purgatory.
Okay now ive never seen battlestar galactica, but from what ive read they might as well of ripped it right off.
You have a whole series about a mysterious island and the people drawn to it and why and then end with sappy its not about the mysteries, its about how you all bonded together with pretty heavy religious undertones.
Mysteries Not Solved:
Oh god i know ill forget a ton.
The numbers, and why they followed hurley.
How hurley was flawed. Jacob "picked them" cause they were flawed. What the eff was wrong with hurley?
If the light of the island actually affects the outside world.
Why the women couldnt give birth on the island and what significance if any that had
Why was Desmond leading people through purgatory?
And why was that british broad trying to stop him?
Why was walt made to be seen as "special" early on and then never really mentioned again?
Why do they need to protect the light from mortals? they cant even find it. In fact the only people who seem to be able to really use it are the "protectors" and if it needs saving from anyone it seems to be them. Mortals couldnt get to it, MIB couldnt find it.. it seemed to do a damn good job of hiding itself.
Why in hell Sayid is waiting for shannon, not Nadia, when he dies. I mean really now?
Otherwise ive been good, busy but pretty good. Im obsessed with my Ball jointed dolls again and am saving up for two more.
While waiting for those funds ive been redoing the faces of my current boys, though only one has a body currently.
Also dug out my my little pony collection. Ahhh nostalgia.
