On Politics. And Christianity. And Christianity and politics.

So, heavy stuff upcoming, I suppose.

I'll start with something funny.

A DISCLAIMER: This post is a lot of my own beliefs, and there's not going to be a lot of Scripture in here.  I don't think it's right to take Scripture to try to enforce my personal beliefs on debatable matters.

You know what annoys me?  When people dismiss Barack Obama because ( Read more... )

I can't believe no one has commented on this in almost a week. It is a very good essay.

Anyway, have you read Reinhold Niebuhr? Some of your thoughts remind me of him; probabaly beacause it seems like Hauerwas and Willimon have read him.

I don't have much else to say because I don't spend a lot of time thinking about politics. I'm mainly reading Niebuhr for a comic book I'm working on. ;)

Thanks Charles (Charlie, Chuck, Mr Snow? what do you go by?). I have actually just recently bought a book of Niebuhr's writing by the name of Essays in Applied Christianity, but haven't started reading it yet. I need to finish a "devotional biography" on Rich Mullins and a book on Texas History as seen through the eyes of an Englishmen, both borrowed, first. As for this post, it's actually been two months. Since March. I should update.

Speaking of "Mr Snow," have you read Warren Ellis' Planetary series? At least entirely enjoyable, in my opinion, and possibly brilliant.

And regarding comic books you're working on... I can't wait! And I also can't resist asking how Niebuhr relates to the comic you're working on. Is it an SCB or something else?

March, May, I always get those confused.

Charles, please. ^.^ I am not Charlie, sideburns or no.

The Neibuhr book I'm reading is "Faith and Politics". I always have trouble reading theology; about a third of the time I find it really insightful, another third of the time it all seems like a lot of random nonsense, and then the other third of the time I'm sure it is very intelligent but I can't follow it. ;) Anyway, thought, when I am on board, it does offer a way of thinking about things other than the "religious right/religious left" divide.

Of course, I myself don't really fit into any of the three categories because I'm kinf of a terrible Christian, or at least highly unchurched. Being an artist doesn't leave a large amount of time for anything else.

Hehe. Yeah, I think I've only read the first volume in that, but it was pretty good. I get a bigger kick out of "Mister Wolf" in Fables. :)

Charles, then. I feel like I should shake hands or something.

Theology, yeah. I read a book of Hauerwas' on the seven last words of Christ and didn't understand much of it at all. My head just wouldn't wrap around his concepts.

Oh man, Bigby's story in Fables and his relationship with Snow White is just fantastic. Did your LJ name come from that or precede it?

An interstellar Jimmy Carter. Sounds like fun. Good luck!

oh hi. Yeah, I found you in the Christianity community, and was intrigued by what you posted, so I wanted to keep updated when you posted. I probably should have asked first, sorry. If you would rather me un-add you (heh), I sure can.

Most of this post here was emotional, but it still gets the points across that I want to get across. I don't support Obama, and having learned more about Huckabee's platform since the posting of this post, it turns out I kind of like him more after all. Not that it matters at this point. *shrug*

Peace and grace.
