Do not forget that after Jesus ascended into heaven that the Great Counselor (aka the Holy Spirit) filled the disciples, which explains a lot of what happens in Acts. Tho Jesus had left the earth the disciples still continued his work. Now I'm a protestant and therefor don't believe in confessing to God through a priest but just because one priest is gone doesn't mean that the church's work through you is done. You can still confess your sins. Also, it's normal to feel shame when confessing. It's called acknowledgment. That's part of the confessing process.
