A use for coconut oil

Feb 12, 2009 14:01

Coconut oil is supposed to be very good for you. Something about it containing medium-chained fatty acids versus long-chained ones. That's about as far as my knowledge of it goes. I've been reading about it for a couple of years, but it doesn't much sink in. All I know is that there is a cult-like following for the stuff, and, well, as I've ( Read more... )

I've never heard of using it on teeth but I use it on my face and on cuts after they've healed to help with scarring....and in winter I lather it on like mad on my legs and arms to moisturize...oh and also on my hair.

I mostly use it in cooking, but have used it as a moisturizer here and there. For some reason, no matter how dry and crackled my hands and legs get, I am just not a fan of moisturizer. I have no idea why I'd prefer to be dry and crackly, but I seem to. I've read about using it on hair but never tried it. Do you use it before washing or ?

I use it afterwards....usually after I blow dry my hair. I know that's really bad to do but my hair will take 24ish hours to dry on it's own otherwise.

The only thing I know about coconut oil is it's freaking expensive. I was going to buy some but when I went to the local health food store I was like ?!?!?!?!$$$$$$$?!?!??!!? and changed my mind.

It is incredibly expensive, especially if you order it online and pay shipping. It's an indulgence I really should not treat myself to, but, well, as you have surely noticed, I am not really good with money. I really do love the stuff, and I've done so much reading on it (but it's reading that I certainly can't regurgitate, as you see) that I am convinced it's worth the price.

I love the stuff. I use it as sunscreen as well as for internal use. I have had baked goods that were made with it and they are really something. It is a tad greasy on the skin if you overuse it though.

Someone complained it's expensive. Maybe so but a little goes a long way and it's a hell of a lot safer than partially hydrogenated vegetable oils (AKA trans fats).

Yeah, I love the stuff, too. Bruce Fife, whom I'm guessing you are familiar with, apparently says to take two or three tablespoons daily. I've not yet done that on any regular basis. First, because the first time I did, I stupidly took far too much at once and then spent the entire day in the bathroom. (Sorry for the TMI there.) Second, because I am really bad at remembering to do things throughout the day. I definitely use it in cooking. I don't do much (as in almost none) baking, so I've not yet tried that. You've got me curious now, though, so maybe I'll give it a try.

Yeah, it's definitely expensive, but it's one thing I refuse to give up.

I'm not really a heart sort of girl, but I really like your icon. :)
