However, by the same token, the attacks have become just another news story of tragedy at the hands of people we hear about every day on the news

Nothing is wrong with you. I guess that after all these attacks and incidents, you start growing numb to it. The feeling of saddness is still there, but you're not as heavily impacted because it's happened before, and you know that things like this are going to keep happening, even if the authorities do their best in trying to prevent them. You're right, life does go on
