Dead Like Me: An Overview (a wip)

Apr 16, 2006 21:20

A week ago, I read Dead Like Them, a SG1/Atlantis/Dead Like Me crossover AU.  Two days later I bought the complete series of Dead Like Me. Three days later, I was finished watching the series.  I hate mourning shows that are completely gone.  In many cases (with perhaps The Sentinel and Due South being the exceptions) you miss out on all the fic and the entire fandom (if one even existed).  So I decided to create this little guide for myself so that I can find and easily locate all Dead Like Me fic, communities etc. that I've come across to make my lfie a little easier.

What is this show?
George was hit by a falling toilet seat and was incinerated.  Instead of pearly gates, she was met with Rube, the head of external causes for the Reaps in Chicago(?).  She also meets his team of misfits, including Mason, a man who commits not only petty crimes (like beating up the parking metres) but also smuggles drugs and other misdeeds in order to survive.  Betty is another reaper who decides to follow a reap shortly into the series, leaving George to meet former Hollywood Starlet Daisy Adair, whose talent lies in the way of giving blow jobs and hand jobs to the famous stars of the time.  And there's also Roxy, but she kind of floats around shooting them, pissed off most of the time and being the furthest removed from the gang.  The show also looks at George's family as they grieve.  There is her father, who was most definitely gay in the first couple of episodes, but then turns into a professor who cheats on his wife with his young blond students.  Her little sister, Reggie, experiments with taxidermy, stealing toilet seats to make a shrine on a tree, the Goth lifestyle and more as she struggles with her sister's death.  And as for her mother, well she spends her time doing mom things.  And those are the folks of Dead Like Me.

OTP: None.  I can read most pairings (though I'd really rather not read George/Rube) but it's not a requirement and not a deterrent.  Given that my favourite character is George, I prefer reading a story where she is present, but she doesn't have to be the person in the relationship.  That is what I loved about Dead Like Me.  I didn't love any particular pairing, I loved the characters.  I was never stressed about what would happen from one episode to the next.  My stomach wasn't tied in knots like when watching Elena flirt with Danny or the Sam and martin horror show of season three.

Fav. character: Georgie is my girl.  She's wicked in so many ways.  Wry and funny and still a child trying to grow into adulthood even though she'll be 18 forever.

And now there is a follow-up to this fic - Dead Like Them: Dead Man Walking.  I appreciate this AU so much more now that I know the show and the world that the Stargate characters inhabit.
