Title: If today was your last day
Pairing: HayaRyu
Disclaimer: They're not mine. Sad but true.
Rating: PG
A/N: Betaed by poor fingeredheart who had to stand my crappy writing. Based on a song of the same title by Nickelback. Lyrics here and song here.

The steps of Hayato’s silver shoes resound loud and clear in the gym as he takes their diploma with secure hands, turning around to face his classmates. His eyes lock on Ryu’s with the slightest hint of a smile that Ryu returns just for a fraction of a second. Hayato looks proud, chest puffed out as he walks back to his seat, winking playfully at their teacher as he goes.

Yankumi insists on treating them all to ramen, and nobody complains because it means a free lunch. They give her their pork - again - but Hayato snatches two pieces away when she is not looking and drops them on Ryu’s bowl with a naughty smile, and Ryu’s grateful because he doubts there will be ramen as good as Kumai-san’s in Canada. They thank her for the meal, but sneak away as soon as they are finished - this day is for them alone to share.

The billiard tables are almost empty, and they have the area all to themselves. Hyuga is sprawled on top of a table and Tsucchi plays distractedly with a cue. Ryu leans against the wall, beside Hayato, and they exchange their uniform buttons silently. Hayato brushes his thumb over the cold metal with a distant look in his eyes; Ryu squeezes his tight in his fist. Their comfortable silence is broken when Take calls them over for a game.

Unsurprisingly, Hayato wins, flashing a cheeky grin as the others groan and leave ahead. Ryu feels a hand on the small of his back just as he steps into the street, and then a solid weight sliding into his pocket. He frowns when his fingertips brush over the smooth surface of a billiard ball, but he has to fight back a smile when Hayato leans in to whisper over his ear “a memento”.

The sun has almost set when they plop down by the riverside, enjoying the chilly breeze. They are closer to the river than usual and Tsucchi gives an undignified squeak when Take splashes water at him, then curses and chases the smaller boy. Somehow Hyuga ends up involved, and Hayato too when they trip over him. Ryu laughs as his best friend roars and tries to snatch away the tallest boy’s fan. Hayato stops to look at him in awe, reddish hair shining like gold under the orange light, but the moment is broken as someone throws more water at Hayato and the boy sputters and swears loudly, resuming the chasing while Ryu just looks and smiles.

They all cheer when Hayato offers a sleepover at his place, since his father is away, and even more when the boy brings out three packs of beers as soon as Taku is sent to bed. Ryu frowns - they are not legal yet - but ends up drinking anyway, a pink blush spreading over his cheeks as he gets gradually drunk. The alcohol gets to all of them soon, as they are not used to drinking, and before long Take is giggling and hiccupping and Tsucchi is making fun of him. They slump against each other, exchanging promises of everlasting friendship, staying true to themselves and visits to Canada with as little slurring as their clumsy tongues allow them.

Time goes unnoticed and at some point Ryu realizes that there has been silence around him for a while now. He looks around to find Hyuga curled up on the armchair, Take and Tsucchi tangled together on the carpet, all asleep. Hayato is sitting beside him on the couch, but the bangs falling over his eyes do not let Ryu see if he is asleep.

Ryu is suddenly nervous, his mind clearer, awake. He gulps and glances at Hayato, then back at the front, fleetingly feeling relieved that no one is awake to see him like this. He stares down at his hands, crisped over his lap, and bites his lips. He has thought about it so many times already, prepared his words at home for so many hours, and yet he cannot find the right ones to say. But he has promised himself not to let things go unsaid just like always, not to leave for Canada without making the most out of his last day.

He almost jumps off the couch when he glances at Hayato again to find him staring back. Ryu tries to look as cool as ever, but even he can tell he is failing as he gulps and squirms under the weight of Hayato’s look - and why is it that his friend does not seem to be drunk at all?

“We should catch some sleep. You have to catch an early flight tomorrow.”

Ryu nods slowly while they get comfortable on the couch, and he curses silently at himself as he feels the courage he has managed to muster quickly slipping away. Neither of them is sleeping after five minutes pass, though. Hayato is staring at the ceiling and Ryu shifts, scratching the back of his head and opening his mouth to say something - what, he does not know yet. Hayato beats him, voice low and deep.

“I’ll miss you. It’s gonna be lonely without you.”

“Yeah. Me too.”

There is silence and Ryu thinks this is so unlike them, admitting their feelings - part of them, at least, on his part - aloud just like that. He can feel Hayato’s stare burning through him, looking right into his soul, deep and dark and unreadable, full of emotion when Ryu finally dares to look at him. He feels himself wavering under it, unable to stop the sudden bubbling in his guts - if this is what they call love, it is an uncomfortable feeling, he concludes.

And then there are lips on his, slow and gentle and tasting of beer and mints, and his eyes cross with the effort of looking at Hayato’s face from so close. Ryu is not sure about when or how the distance closed between them, but he does not quite care as he kisses back, clumsily - he can blame that on the alcohol later if Hayato teases him, after all. The boy does not, though, just looks at him with an amused smile when they part.

“You know, you’re gotta have to elaborate when you get to Canada.”

Ryu hits Hayato’s shoulder playfully and Hayato tackles him down to pull him closer. Ryu’s gasp makes Take stir, and Hayato gives him a mocking glare while setting in a comfortable position with him between his arms.

They are still pressed close to each other when Ryu wakes up, trapped in Hayato’s embrace. He shifts and Hayato mumbles something against his nape without waking up, tickling him. Ryu smiles, snuggling closer - he will deny it if anyone ever says he snuggles, mind you, but it is fine, since nobody is awake yet. He inhales Hayato’s scent and tries to look over his shoulder at his friend’s face: sleeping peacefully, messy bangs falling all over his head and lips parted to let out soft snores.

Ryu lets out a happy sigh and goes back to sleep with his head on Hayato’s arm. He will have time to tell them he is not going to Canada after all when they wake up and start panicking about him having missed his flight.
