fast because of kids anonymous August 5 2011, 13:28:27 UTC
Be nice if someone could do a virtual movie of Beis Hamkdash in action. It would have to have been pretty messy to our modern eyes. Barefoot Cohanim running around blood stained floors. I feel the same as you about fasting but do it only because wife and kids do it so it would seem like a betrayal not to.
Also I follow standard advice of cutting caffiene down week before and take a multi-vitamin just before fast begins. I allow myself (not halachikally permitted) to use the little under the tounge breath strips at work.

I sympathize about the spouse and kids. My older daughter just started fasting and I feel like I have to be a role model blah blah blah

Here's the joke I promised:

The village club somewhere in Soviet Union announced a lecture with the topic: "The people and the Party are united." Nobody came. A week later another lecture was announced: "Three kinds of love." People crammed into the club.
- There are three kinds of love - began lecturer.
- First type, he said - is the love of a man to a man. This is not good, and on this subject we will not be talking.
- The second type - a normal love, love of a man to a woman. This kind you know well enough, so it is also not worth talking about. That leaves the third, the highest form of love - love of the people to the Party. This is what we'll discuss in this lecture.

And pretty relevant too. I am sure that is exactly what the shluchim will be discussing there:)

"Is there any reason to fast if I don't believe in hell?"

Is there any reason to stop smoking if I don't believe in cancer? Good question.

well, yes there are lots of reasons. Smoking smells bad and is unpleasant to those around you. There are many people who stop smoking even though they personally feel they are immune to cancer or don't care about cancer.

What is your point?

I understand that you are trying to impress upon us your belief that one who doesn't believe in hell is just as deluded as one who does not believe in cancer.

But do you have anything other than your own conviction to support this?

You can start by citing a primary source (chumash, gemara, etc. nothing later than the SA) that specifically states that the punishment for eating on tishabav is burning in hell forever and ever.

You don't have to worry about going to hell. Just make sure when the time comes they know where to find the aluminum foil. And if that's not enough tell them about the gebrochs, and the peeling of the fruit, and the plastic bags, and the sheitels. You'll be okay.

I dont fast , and the easy way out is not to eat in front of anyone

Part of Messanic times is the in gathering of the jews in Israel. This actually has partially occured. Jews from the Arab World, Ethiopia Europe all went to Israel (Operation Moses, Operation Magic Carpet , Operation Ezra and Nehemiah) . Its true there are jews in the US and Western Europe and other places but those populations are getting smaller and the number of countries with jewish populations is decreasing
