Doesn't Sadie need to tell Clarissa that she doesn't actually know the source and reason for the mice-poking part of the custom, because she is but a hen, but she trusts that her Rooster must have learned it. Anyway, in HER coop, the long-time habits of the other chickens are the same as any requirement from the Lord of the Poultry.

Oh, and the farmer in Clarissa's coop never wears denim overalls, and doesn't want his son to do so either. His big fear is that the chickens will peck him to death if he does. Other farmers think that he is being ridiculous, living in fear of a bunch of chickens when he is the farmer and should take charge, but he says "I chose to live on a farm with a chicken coop, which has many advantages such as fresh eggs, and the reality is that my particular chickens will instantly start pecking any denim that they see."
