Sword Play
Olivier sees Louis sneaking out the back door with something in his hands. Curious about it, she follows him.
He stops past a cropping of trees in the yard, just beyond the house and pulls out his treasure. A sword she has seen in father’s study.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
Alex turns and tries to hide the sword behind him. It doesn’t work.
They stare at each other. Olivier wins when Alex looks guiltily away.
“I wanted to see it up close.”
“It’s just some silly sword. Put it back before you get in trouble.”
“But this one’s different,” He turns it in his hands. The engravings on the blade catch the sun. “This has been in our family for generations.”
“Just like everything else.” She sighs.
“Then I’m not letting you play with it.” He scowls.
“It’s not something you should be playing with in the first place!” She snaps. Their argument is cut short when father’s car ambles up the driveway. Alex’s eyes go round.
“You’re very right sister. It’s a weapon, not a toy. As such, I give it to you to put back.”
The sword is shoved into her hands and Alex runs off too fast to follow. Olivier glares after him, and then looks to the sword. The weight feels good in her hands. When she runs her hand up the side of the blade, her finger slips. She flinches at the pain.
Her brother is right. It’s a weapon, not a toy.
