(No spoilers, so excuse the vagueness of this comment) Regarding Mary: A lot can be explained by the fact that the writer(s) of this series are men. There are some things that men just DO NOT get. It can be fun (or frustrating) to see how they get things WRONG WRONG WRONG.
I think it pretty much boils down to Moffat being enamored with his own cleverness and his not being edited (enough?)
You're right that there are some things men don't get about women -- but many of those times it's mere ignorance that can be corrected. (I was in a writing workshop where a guy was writing a story from a woman's point of view. He made it a point to say that the high heels were hurting her feet as she helped serve Thanksgiving dinner. Every woman in the group agreed that the character would not be wearing heels at this point in the story.)
Pregnancy is a weird thing. There's a whole show about women who didn't know they were pregnant. A friend of mine knew she was pregnant with her first even before she missed her first period (couldn't explain how she knew; she just "felt" pregnant.)
And my seamstress grandmother used to say she could tell a woman was pregnant based on how her waist and bust measurements changed. *Shrug* Everyone's different, I get that. But it still bugs me that it was SHERLOCK who figured it out "first."
True. Although they had him making one deduction more than he meant to a couple of times before then, as well.
I confess to finding myself reading my one of old favorite fanfics from the first series with Sarah just now. (The Affair of the Asphyxiated Acafan!) Mentally comparing the woman fandom invented to partner John with what the writers of the show have done. Finding a few parallels at least, but mostly just enjoying the fic all over again. I wish I wrote that well!
Well, I just finished the story instead of doing my homework for the second night in a row. WORTH IT!!!! Thank you so much for the recommendation -- got it bookmarked now! (luckily we had two snow days in a row :D )
