i think this is exactly how bands break-up due to "creative differences". essentially you're going to have to compromise yourself to be in a band that plays music that you don't really associate with, and you have to weigh the pros and cons. it'd be a neat opportunity to get some exposure, tour, and just play, and maybe if it opens the right doors, it'll allow you to do other things at some point.
of course, if you take the gig and in your heart know that you're not fully committed to the music, that's not really fair to the band. maybe communicate your feelings to this person and see what they think. maybe they won't mind that you're not really "into" them as long as you're willing to play. better to get it out in the open now than later.
Do it. You will have time to be you once you are rich. Learn to understand what the average music listner is looking for. Not complicated good music, but simple brainless crap. We can't help what the masses like, but you can help to make the band a little bit more progressive while going along for the ride. Plus you make cash. And we all know what CSUN thinks of your grades.
you ARE allowed to maintain your own musical preferences, likes and dislikes while playing in a band you admitted sounds good. My advice, don't get so hung up on what's played on KROQ, what's indie and what's selling out...if you think they are good and you want to play and you want all thesse "connections" and whatnot, then swallow your musical-pride and just play for the sake of playing....with some good musicians. It could be a good thing...you like the people, you like the talent...what's the dilemma?? Don't pass up a good thing because it isn't "you"...that's lame. You will bring your own influences to the table too. Frankly, I like a lot of pop/punk when it's done well. It's not like you're joining Blink 182, where the geeks can't even tune their instruments or sing on key.

dude, that saul williams kicks my butt. i can't stop listening to it. it's soooo rock'n but it's hip hop. dude, you have to read the liner notes, you can read the raps like poems and it's still amazing. the cd layout reminds me of what you want to do with ben's album.
hahaahaha....its not just me! poo on you for saying that. i want to play i want to practice with you. let's just buckle down and set a time that's permanent. okay.....and if drew can join in, then so be it.
