Read the fourth chapter,
Rose found herself begging every trainer who came into town if they had seen a lost Ditto in the woods. She asked an old woman, a pair of red-headed twins, a boy with dark hair, and a man about her age who tried to flirt with her the whole time. This time, her plea was to a small silver-blonde haired girl. The girl was petite, but it was easy to tell she had an unusual maturity for her age.
"Excuse me, have you seen a Ditto?"
The girl gave her a strange look with her sky blue eyes, and waited for an answer to her unspoken question.
"My sister sent her daughter's Ditto to live with me, but it was lost when Team Rocket stole the truck. I'm trying to see if anyone found it."
The girl looked at the ground, lost in deep thought. Then, she looked up and began to open her mouth but saw something in the distance. She shook her head quickly and ran off. Rose turned to see the strange girl approach a boy a couple years older, and Rose figured they were adventuring together. That's cute, she thought, before turning her attention to the newest newcomer.
Ditto almost revealed itself to the human who knew her trainer, but realized she could still achieve her human's goal when it saw the dark-haired boy again. On closer observance, the boy really wasn't a boy. He was more of a young adolescent, a teenager. He was looking at a map, and turning the paper to a different angle every minute or so. The Ditto approached him slowly, not sure how to tell him it saw him in the woods, not even sure how to speak. Luckily, the teenage saw her approach and smiled broadly, before asking,
"Hey! Are you looking for anyone?"
The Ditto shook its head quickly and walked up to where it was standing right next to the boy and could see the map. The boy continued to smiled and began pointing at locations on the map,
"Here we are, Violet City. But I can't tell where the Gym is on this map."
He scrunched up his eyes and pulled the paper so it was almost touching his nose. Making sure it would retain the human form, the Ditto giggled slightly because it knew the boy would never see the Gym that way. So, it grabbed the boy's wrist and pulled him to the Poke Center remembering from her human's audible readings that town maps could always be found in the Poke Center. She ran into the building, dragging to boy behind her. Once inside, she pointed to the map mounted on the wall.
"Sweet! Thanks…"
The boys enthusiasm stopped short after his thanks, looking at the Ditto in a strange way. He cleared this throat and asked,
"What's your name?"
The Ditto's heart stopped, how would it tell him its name? It didn't even have a human name. Stuttering, the Ditto tried to make something up.
"D-Di. Di-"
"Oh! Di, short for Diana, right?"
The boy asked, cutting off the Ditto's stuttering. It nodded, satisfied with its new name. The dark-hair boy smiled again, and stuck out a tanned hand saying,
"I'm Jake Hailey." The Ditto cautiously shook the boy's hand, remembering this greeting rituals from her human's caretaker's interactions with other adults. Jake seemed satisfied with his new friend and asked her,
"Are you trying to become the Pokémon Master too?"
Ditto felt as though it should vocalize from time to time, so that the Jake Boy did not become suspicious.
"D-D-Duh."
The Ditto spat out, her lips and vocal chords struggling around the unfamiliar syllables. Jake smiled at her answer, liking this new friends more and more.
"So, you're registered, right?"
The Ditto cocked its head, unsure of why a trainer had to be registered. Then, it shook its head back and forth in a vigorous "no". Jake's lips pursed as he thought, then the answer hit him as he smiled ,yet again, and spread his arms out for emphasis.
"Well, luckily for you new trainers can register right here in a Poke Center!"
Jake grabbed the Ditto's arm and dragged it over to the counter, where a Nurse was picking at her nails while waiting for some action.
"Excuse me, ma'am?"
The Nurse looked up lazily, but then realizing she had a possible patient in front of her she straightened up and flashed a signature smile at the pair.
"What can I do for you two today?"
"My friend Di needs to register as a trainer."
The Nurse signed, and grabbed some papers out from a drawer. She put them in a specific order and handed them to the pair, along with a red pen that said "Violet City Poke Center" in white letters along it.
"Fill these out and give them back to me, then she can come to the back and I'll take her picture for the ID."
Jake nodded, and handed the papers to the disguised Ditto. It walked over to a chair next to the coffee table and began filling out the form.
Jake watched his new friend Di fill out the paperwork, occasionally scratching her head or pausing in thought before writing in some information. He was so happy that he met someone to travel with, even if that someone was a young, quiet girl like Di. Jake really wanted another boy to adventure with because he heard girls were picky and annoying to sleep outside with. But, he thought cheerfully, Di seemed awesome and eager to be a trainer.
"So, is that your sister or something?"
The Nurse's question broke his train of thought, and it took Jake a moment to recover. He pushed a strand of dark brown hair out of his eyes and answered,
"No, she's just a friend of mine."
The Nurse nodded, taking in the information. Then, she blushed for a moment and said whispered like she was trying to not draw a crowd,
"Your name is Jake, Right? Like the Hailey brothers?"
Jake frowned angrily, shoving his hands into his jacket pockets and mumbled,
"Yeah, but I gotta help Di fill out some of this paperwork."
He then quickly walked over to Di and sat down next to her, immediately pointing out something she had forgotten. The nurse watched him leave, and as soon as the young sat down with his friend, she whipped out her phone and began texting her friend.
The Ditto was having a hard time filling out all the questions on the papers. There were things like Date of Birth, Last Name, Medical History, and home address that it couldn't answer. The Questionnaire was easy, it just wanted to know why the trainer-to-be wanted to become a trainer. Jake sat down quickly at its side, an angry look on his face. It disappeared as soon as the Ditto turned its head towards him, and Jake pointed to the empty spaces.
"Di, you forgot to put your last name in."
The Ditto rolled its eyes, a satisfying human ability, and managed to spit out,
"Duh."
This time the "duh" was more natural because the Ditto already knew how it form the human mouth the form the "uh" sound from her previous, almost disastrous experience. Jake sighed, and leaned back on the couch, waiting for it to finish up. The Ditto knew the current year from the super atomic clock on the wall, and did some math that would make its human form 13 years old, about the age Jake looked. For the month and year, the Ditto winged it by putting a 4 under the month and a 17 under the day. It noticed that in the 'Address' box, there was an option that said 'Orphan/Homeless'. Happy it wouldn't have to forge an address, the Ditto quickly checked the answer. Last name was easier than expected, the Ditto just wrote "Williams", the name of the man her human had to visit weekly. Satisfied by the fake last name and 'homeless' option on the sheet, the Ditto scratched a line over the Medical History category, hoping that by crossing out the question the Nurse wouldn't ask for it. Satisfied by its answers, the Ditto handed the packet off to Jack, who checked to make sure everything was filled in. During their time, the Nurse's shift had ended and another one taking her place, this one much more enthusiastic about her current boring job.
"We're done!"
Jack declared, handing the registrations papers to the new Nurse, who immediately scanned them into the computer with a happy smile. She looked puzzled for a moment, and asked the Ditto carefully,
"You crossed out Medical History. Do you not know, or do you just have no major medical history?"
Jake and the new nurse looked expectantly at the Ditto, waiting patiently for it to speak. Mouth moving and vocal chords stretching, the Ditto slowly coughed out,
"Don't have any."
The nurse smiled happily, as did Jake, and the nurse clicked a couple keys on the computer before turning back to the Ditto.
"Now, Diana, come back with me so I can take your picture!"
The Ditto followed obediently to the back, where it stood in front of a digital camera connected to a large computer and orange printer. The Nurse smiled as she positioned herself behind the monitor, hitting a couple buttons with her pointer finger before giving the Ditto the instructions,
"Smile, and say cheese!"
It tried to say "Cheese", unsure of why though. A bright flash of light temporarily blinded the Pokémon, and the click that accompanied the light signaled the picture was taken. The Nurse cheerfully said something about the picture coming out great, but the Ditto continued to blink furiously to get rid of the light's flash from its eyes and didn't hear her. A loud mechanical groan came from the orange printer, and a Pokémon Trainer Card promptly popped out. The Nurse handed the card to the Ditto, and led it out of the back room.
"Let's see it!"
Jake grabbed the card and admired the red shiny plastic with a nice picture of a small blonde girl, who looked slightly shocked in her picture. In all caps on the top of her card it said: Diana Williams - Pokémon Trainer.
"Now, here's your Pokedex!"
The nurse said cheerfully, handing the Ditto an older, silver, dinosaur of a Pokedex. The Ditto felt the large handheld machine in its hand and weighed it carefully. It weighed a lot and was bulkier looking than the pictures of Pokedexes from her human's encyclopedia. The nurse looked irritated and cut into Ditto's observation,
"It's an older model."
As Jake relaxed with this explanation, the Ditto felt that it should too. Jake happily accepted the Pokedex and put it in his backpack along with Di's trainer card for safe keeping. The nurse smiled again, although this time the smile was obviously fake as she was boring of this pair and introducing the new trainer.
"Hun, when you get any Pokémon, put the white center of the Pokeball to the sensor on the back and the Pokedex will record and archive your Pokémon, so you can enter contests and festivals with your Pokémon. For a started, you'll have to catch your own. We just ran out of issued started Pokémon, sorry."
Jake seemed irritated, but agreed to collecting the free Pokebals as a sort of consolation gift for Di, and turned to Di. Smiling again, which made Di wonder why all humans seemed so happy, Jake turned to his new friend and said,
"Let's go catch a Pokémon!"
