I did the same thing with our TiVo while we had it. It was great finally being able to hear my music in surround sound.

What do you mean "while we had it"? Whereever did your Tivo go? How could have possibly parted with it?

We get our cable from Comcast, who sells their own cable box/dvr all-in-one. It's not quite as snazzy (no link-up to the computer), but it does basically the same thing, and it was cheaper.
