Something like this? It is not uncommon to do something bad/terrible/regretable to ensure a positive outcome.
But a necessary mistake? Sounds unreasonable.
Avoid acting outside of reason.

sometimes you have to go in the completely wrong direction to know the right way to go. which is pretty much what that merchant of venice quote says. life wouldn't be life without mistakes.
