“Gunless” to make history at local theatre

The Oliver Theatre will be making history on April 30 when it hosts the national premiere of “Gunless” a feature length western movie that was filmed in the Richter Pass near Osoyoos last spring.

This feature premiere marks the first time a movie has opened in Oliver on the same day as the national release.

Publicity releases describe the plot as follows:

“Gunless starred Canadian actor Paul Gross as the “Montana Kid,” an American gunslinger who staggers into the tiny Canadian hamlet of Barclay’s Brush, life for the town’s 17 inhabitants is about to get exciting. The Kid immediately gets into an unfortunate altercation with Jack, the town’s surly blacksmith, which leads to the The Kid ‘calling him out’ for some good old frontier justice - a showdown. But in a place totally ill prepared to deal with a classic gun fight and without a single working pistol to be found, adhering to the code of the American Wild West may prove difficult.

Not able to let go of the ‘code’, The Kid remains stuck in Barclay’s Brush, getting drawn into a strange world of eccentric rituals and characters; among them Jane, a smart sassy woman who becomes his only hope of finding a way out… or perhaps his only reason for staying…”

Several local actors were hired as extras during the filming, and local businesses in the Similkameen were hired for various aspects of the production including construction of the set which consisted of a dozen pioneer type buildings located near the top of Richters Pass west of Osoyoos.

With the recent rise of the Canadian dollar, the feature film industry is expected to slow down considerably in Canada and B.C.

It promises to be an exciting evening at Oliver Theatre on Friday, April 30 as the first local viewing of Gunless takes place.
