I told a white classmate about how casual it is for Asian parents to make comments about their children’s’ weight. She frowned and said, “That would not be okay in my household. That would not go over well.” It’s a cultural disconnect I’m still trying to grapple and understand.

this is interesting, I'm white and have several Chinese friends. They would often relate stories of their parents being really out of order to them, but they seemed confused when we would respond with "your family said what to you now?" and said it was just a cultural thing.

Although, that said, two of said friends have actually disowned their parents now.

Being a cultural thing doesn't mean it's okay. It means I'm hating my culture more and more because this is acceptable. Weight and skin colour. I've been bullied all my life because I'm several shades darker than my fellow Chinese friends.
