A cool thing I found in the Lost Encyclopedia was the Letter of Truce formed between Goodspeed and Richard. All of this sounds great but I want to know why Ethan went to the other side - especially with (I'm assuming) his parents still on the island.

It didn't look like they were forming an army to take down the Others.

But weren't they creating measures to take down the Others in 1977? And wasn't that big hole dangerously tapping into the island's magnetic energy?

I think they were more focused on quartering off a nice big chunk of the island for themselves more than taking down the Others. I don't know. Can you remember any specific moments when it shows that they were plotting against the Others?

Yeah, the big hole was tapping into the island's magnetic energy. That's probably why Richard instructed them not to dig any deeper than ten meters.
