art talk with Talena: Sigalit Landau

Some art talk - with pictures! From the lumenlumen blog I am lamely attempting resurrect/improve?

Sigalit Landau's show at the MoMA looks incredible online, anyway. I need to get to the MoMA this week. I've seen her video/performance documentation at the PS 1 in last year's bodily-themed exhibition - she's hula hooping nude in front the ocean. The hula hoop is made of barbed wire, and you're getting a close shot of it hitting her ripped and bruised torso slo-mo style. It's totally sick and fascinating and tense and so visceral, but it's simultaneously gorgeous - I think she's a genius. Some images:

These are 'chandeliers' made out of barbed wire and dipped in the Dead Sea

video still of a performance - those are watermelons

Video still from the previously mentioned video.

And the kicker of it all - as I'm looking through the list of sponsors for the exhibition:

"The Elaine Dannheisser Projects Series is made possible in part by The Junior Associates of The Museum of Modern Art and the JA Endowment Committee.

Additional funding for this exhibition is provided by artis."

First of all - typo on the MoMA website (artis)!
Second of all - the artist is paying for her own show at the MoMA. This is an artist who is showing in major artistic institutions around the world, she's reaching the top of her game. And she has to pay for her own show at the damn MoMA. WTF? If this artist can't find funding for a show at the MoMA, will I or the collective ever actually get any funding? I mean that's just ludicrous.
