The one they called YC woke up in the middle of the night. His cough was getting worse. He grabbed his blanket around his shoulders and sat down by the fire. He wasn't the only one who couldn't sleep. Taemin, the youngest of the Shinee Bunch, was restless as well. Seeing his hyung so sick was breaking his heart.
"Hyung," Taemin called out to YC. "I've made you some tea."
"Thanks, kid." YC took the tea and inhaled it deeply.
"Hey kid. What's in this tea?"
Taemin blushed.
"I put some whiskey in there. I thought it would help."
YC blew on the hot cup and took a small sip.
"That's good kid, thanks."
Taemin sat by his hyung at the fire. He had a worried look on his face.
YC began to cough again. He looked over at Taemin who seemed frightened.
"Hyung, are you going to die?"
YC tried to laugh, but he coughed once again.
"We all die, kid. Some sooner than others."
Taemin's eyes started to mist over. He put his arms around YC and started to cry.
"Please don't die hyung," the boy cried. YC felt a bit uncomfortable. He put his arms around Taemin and reassured him.
"Shh, kid. I'll be okay. You'll see. Don't worry about me."
But Taemin wouldn't let go. He clung to YC for dear life. YC found himself rocking the boy in his arms as if he were a baby. He sang a song in his all too familiar voice made even more raspy from his illness. The sweet song soothed the boy who fell asleep in YC's arms. The whisky from the tea had it's effect too, slowly helping YC to drift off to sleep.
The next morning the Dongbang Boys and the Shinee Bunch awoke to a strange site. YC and Taemin sleeping together at the fire. The two woke up and instantly broke off their embrace. Yunho raised an eyebrow at YC who shrugged his shoulders.
Jae prepared a nice hot breakfast for everyone, but once again YC did not partake in the meal. Instead he wrapped his portion of food up and put it in his saddle bags. The gang members all looked at each other.
Yunho approached YC, who was getting his horse ready to go.
"Where do you think you are going?" he asked the younger man.
YC continued to check the bridle and saddle on his horse.
"I'm going to SM Town."
Changmin nearly choked on a slice of bacon.
"Are you out of your mind?" Yunho asked him. "If they find out who you are they will shoot you on the spot."
"Nah, more than likely they'll send me off with a grand hangin'. Besides, killing me won't get them their gold back, will it? Nope. If they figure out who I am, they'll come up with a plan to draw you boys out. But you won't let that happen, will 'ya? Y'all too smart for that. Nope, you'll just let them kill me, won't y'all?
The boys all looked in disbelief.
"Let's face the facts, Yunho. I'm sick and I can't keep up with the rest of you. I'm going into town. I've heard there's a good doctor there. One that can be trusted. One that isn't under Lee Soo Man's thumb."
Yunho sighed. YC was right.
"So this is goodbye then?" Jae asked.
The others looked as if they were at a funeral.
YC smiled at them. He climbed on his horse and prepared to say goodbye. Taemin rushed to him with his favorite hat.
"Don't forget this, Hyung" the boy called to him.
"You keep it kid," YC said to the boy. I've got plenty. Yunho tossed YC another hat from his collection.
"You'll need one to keep that broad forehead of yours warm," he joked.
Taemin began to cry again. He held on to YC and wouldn't let go.
"It's ok, kid. Let go. Besides you are making Changmin and Junsu jealous." The two Dong Bang Boys looked at each other and blushed.
Jae pulled Taemin away from YC. The boy sobbed into Jae's chest. Jae comforted the boy the best he could. All the other Shinee members were crying as well. YC did his best not to show his own emotions.
"See ya boys. "
He dug his spurs into the side of his horse.
"Get a move on, Harang, you lazy dog."
The horse whinnied at his master.
"One last ride, son. One last ride."
The Dong Bang Boys and the Shinee Bunch stared in disbelief as their brother rode off through Rising Sun Pass, perhaps never to be seen again.
As YC rode off he thought of the woman on the train.
"I'm coming Nellie. I'm coming home."
