“Junsu? Junsu? Did you hear me?”
Junsu nodded his head, then remembered he was on the phone.
“Jae, come to the hospital. Yoochun is here. This curse has raised its ugly head already. Bring the book; we need to learn more.”
He hung up the phone and went back to Yoochun’s room. Junsu motioned to Changmin who reluctantly left Yoochun’s side. Junsu did his best to describe to Changmin what Jae had told him over the phone.
Changmin furrowed his brow.
“This may be to our advantage. We can tell the cops this crazy bitch attacked Yoochun when the club was busy. They’ll be combing the streets for her.”
Junsu smiled.
“Changmin, you’re a genius!”
Changmin called the authorities. He explained how during a busy night at his club, a woman managed to sneak by his bouncers and followed Yoochun upstairs where she attacked him. Changmin managed to hear the noise and ran to Yoochun’s side. The woman got away; most likely mingling in the crowd to avoid being discovered. He had no idea, he told the police, what her motives were. Most likely she was a jealous ex-girlfriend. Yoochun was in no shape to answer any questions at this time. The hospital would confirm that fact.
The police took down the information and began their search. Changmin breathed a sigh of relief; the cops bought it; at least for now.
He returned to Yoochun’s room; Junsu sitting by the doll’s side. The business man was holding Yoochun’s hand. He looked at Changmin; tears in his eyes.
“He’s going to be ok, isn’t he Min?” Junsu sniffled, no longer able to hold in his emotions.
Changmin re-assured Junsu.
“It’s going to be ok hyung. Everything is going to be okay.”
The two sat together; Changmin hugging Junsu; the two friends weeping for their porcelain treasure.
Yunho drove like a maniac; Jae clutching the book to his chest. They arrived at the hospital; breathless, they were lead to Yoochun’s room. Yunho sighed; Jaejong put his hand to his mouth. Changmin and Junsu were still crying; their eyes red and swollen. They got up from their chairs; all four hugging each other warmly.
Yoochun blinked; he found himself surrounded by his friends. He somehow managed to crack a smile. The doll wanted to speak, but was unable to. Frustrated, Yoochun began to cry; Changmin wiping his tears away. Trying to move, the doll winced in pain.
“Lay still hyung.”
Yoochun smiled. It was the first time Changmin called him by the honorific title. The doll managed a nod, and even though he was frightened, the presence of his friends made him feel safe.
Jae took Junsu aside; Yunho remaining with Changmin. The doll winked at him; Yunho’s cheeks flushing as he remembered the night he touched Yoochun in an inappropriate manner.
Jae sat Junsu down, and together they went through the book, trying to solve its mysteries.
“According to this legend, Yoochun was a prince hundreds of years ago. He was wed to a beautiful princess; a woman of great beauty and talent.”
“Talent?”
Jae turned the page.
“Apparently she excelled at singing and dancing.”
Jae continued to point out important aspects of the story.
“Everything was going well until a handsome young man came to court.”
Jae pointed at Junsu.
“Me? You’ve got to be kidding.”
Jae cleared his throat and once more surveyed the book.
“The prince and the young courtier became friends. At first it was innocent, but then they grew close; too close for the princess. The two men professed their feelings to each other and became lovers.”
Junsu couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“So what you are saying is that in a past life I came between Yoochun and his wife?”
Jae sighed.
“Pretty much. She didn’t take too kindly to being replaced. She plotted her revenge and did the unthinkable.”
Junsu knew what was coming next.
“She broke into your chamber in the dead of night and killed you.”
Junsu shivered.
“Wait; it get’s worse.”
“Worse? What can be worse than some crazy princess killing me?”
Jae turned to the next page.
“Yoochun lost his mind seeing you dead. He killed his wife, then took his own life, hence the wound on his neck. The princess cursed all of you before she died. That’s why this whole mess is happening.”
Junsu turned white.
“What do we do?”
Jae closed the book.
“We have to break the curse. I’m not sure how. I’ll have to read more. I’m also curious about something else. How did Yoochun’s spirit and the spirit of the princess get inside the dolls and who made them? Yoochun was in the window when I purchased the store, but I didn’t know the other doll was there. She was tucked away in the corner, covered by other boxes. When I bought the place, the old man never told me Yoochun’s name; it just came to me. Even more baffling is why your spirit didn’t wind up in a dolls body. This whole thing has me spooked.”
They returned to Yoochun’s room, the doll finally asleep.
“Together boys,” Junsu stated, “we’ll stand together and end this curse.”
They all looked at each other, determined to fight the evil that was on its way.
The evil which they spoke of was clever; hiding in the shadows; absorbing her surroundings. She stole clothes which were hanging on a line; shoes from someone’s stoop. The princess bathed in a fountain at night, cleaning her tall, lean body.
In her new clothes, she wandered out in the daylight; not content with eating out of garbage cans she learned to shop lift from the local grocer. Remembering a trick once performed by a court jester, she picked a pedestrian’s pocket; his wallet fat and full of money.
Clever girl; how could her husband abandon her for a boy?
The princess plotted and planned; found a cheap place to stay; her mind always working like gears.
“I will win you back, my love; my husband.”
She sat in the corner of her lonely hotel room; arms around her knees. She rocked back and forth; tears flowed from her eyes.
The princess cried out in the darkness for her lost love.
Yoochun.”
