Day one:
Subject A is a male; young; mid-twenties if we go by human standards. Subject B is a female, also similar in appearance and age to Subject A.
Dr. Kim Junsu’s personal note: I am highly displeased with the methods which were used to apprehend the subjects. Let it be duly noted that I did not order, nor did I condone the use of violence and weapons….
Scientist and researcher Kim Junsu waited outside the operating theatre with baited breath as the medical team of P.R.O.U.D. struggled to save the life of the creature before them.
Junsu paced the floor like an expectant father; nervously chewing on his pencil; mentally preparing himself for the worst.
Hours passed by when the head doctor pushed open the doors to the operating room.
“Is he dead?”
“Come in,” the doctor told him, and a frightened Junsu staggered into the room.
Subject A, was still alive.
Junsu breathed a sigh of relief.
The medical team stepped away from the operating table to give their chief researcher more room.
Junsu sucked in his breath.
The creature; for that’s what he was; was the most magnificent thing he had ever seen. The male’s arms were strapped to the gurney; no doubt for security reasons. Junsu shook his head in disgust as his eyes fixated upon the creature’s side; stitches holding together skin where a bullet had been removed. The doctors had gone above and beyond to save Subject A’s life, and Junsu would be forever grateful to them.
IV fluids flowed through the creature’s veins; oxygen tubes helping him breathe; Junsu felt a twinge of guilt as he glanced at the heart monitor; but the doctor assured the scientist that Subject A was strong and had pulled through with flying colors.
With shaking hands, Junsu reached out and dared to touch Subject A.
The creature flinched.
Junsu jumped backwards as the male turned his head in Junsu’s direction; long, full lashes fluttered; eyes opened and tried to focus.
“Shouldn’t he be sedated?”
“Don’t worry,” the chief surgeon said; “he can’t do you any serious harm in his condition.”
Subject A’s entire body shuddered; Junsu swallowing hard as he approached once more.
“Look at his wings,” Junsu spoke, his voice cracking. He still couldn’t believe his eyes.
The creature’s impressive wing span was a site to behold; bat like in nature, they jutted out of his back to extend six feet in length.
“What other surprises do you have for me, my friend,” Junsu spoke breathlessly.
He stroked the wings; fingers tracing across the thin membrane of skin.
“Beautiful.”
The creature moaned; breaths rapid; heartbeat increasing.
“It’s alright,” the scientist spoke, his voice low and soft.
Junsu continued to examine the creature.
Subject A was not pleased.
Eyes widened and slowly became aware of his surroundings. Nostrils flared; inhaling deeply, the creature picked up the scent of unfamiliar beings; he was surrounded.
A deep growl emanated from within the creature’s throat; lips peeling back to reveal long, sharpened fangs.
“Yes, you are ferocious, aren’t you,” Junsu mocked him.
The creature bared his fangs once more; the growl louder and more menacing as he became agitated by the stranger’s invasion of his personal space.
Junsu’s attention was soon drawn to two small horns on the creature’s forehead; hidden by a shock of jet black silken hair, they spiraled upward and ended in a sharp point.
“Fascinating.”
The creature’s body shivered like a leaf upon the table; the doctor explaining that patients often felt cold after severe blood loss. The scientist was given a blanket; placing it gingerly across the creature’s body, he tucked the male in as if he were a child.
“There, there,” he said.
Subject A’s mouth opened wide in what seemed like an act of defiance; fangs gleaming; Junsu dared to reach out and touch them.
“He may bite, Junsu” the doctor warned him.
The scientist froze, but instead of a sharp sting, his hand was greeted by a gentle swipe of the creatures tongue. The male’s lower lip trembled as Junsu’s fingers danced upon his skin.
The creature mewled; tiny droplets falling from his dark eyes; Junsu’s digits wiping them away.
“You see,” Junsu explained to the surgeon, “he can be gentle. The violence used upon him today was totally uncalled for.”
The doctor sighed heavily.
“Changmin said the creature was violent and attacked his men.”
Junsu rolled his eyes.
“Changmin…”
The doctor changed the subject.
“The female is pregnant, you know.”
Junsu stared at the doctor.
“Perhaps that’s why the male was aggressive. He was protecting her.”
The scientist nodded his head.
“How is she?”
“She’s perfectly healthy and from what we can tell, so is the baby.”
Junsu nodded his head.
Turning his attention back to the male; he whispered sweetly in the creature’s ear.
“Don’t worry,” he told him; “your girl is safe.”
Junsu patted the male on his arm and turned to walk out the door. He knew the creature needed his rest.
Subject A opened his mouth and uttered a sound; it was animal like in nature, but it was definitely some form of primitive speech.
“He’s talking to you Junsu,” the doctor exclaimed.
Junsu smiled.
“That’s a good thing isn’t it?”
The creatures vocalizations grew louder as Junsu left the operating room; the creature calling out to him as if he was begging him to stay.
“Looks like I’ve made a friend,” the scientist said; pleased with himself that he had finally made contact with a being long since believed to be a legend.
“A demon; I’ve got a demon in my lab.”
Subject A continued to cry out for the scientist until his voice was raw and hoarse.
Overcome by pain and exhaustion, the creature closed his eyes; tongue flicking out once more across his mouth.
The demon smiled as he drifted off to sleep; the taste of Kim Junsu still fresh upon his lips.
