Summary: A God of the East comes to the Temple of Aphrodite
A hooded figure walked across the Agora; cobble stones beneath his sandaled feet. Guards at the gate stood at the ready; no one was allowed to enter the sacred temple in the dead of night unless the priests were feeling charitable towards the poor. But this was no pilgrim or weary traveler.
As if they knew there was something different about him, the guards did not stand in his way. Mesmerized by his countenance they bade him enter the sacred shrine. There within the marble columns and brightly painted walls, he waited to stand before the great stone likeness of the Goddess of Love and Beauty.
Priests rushed to his side. They did not know what to make of this stranger. They bowed and scraped before him as if he were a foreign dignitary come to pay respect. Perhaps he was a rich patron; an admirer of their goddess. Rich merchants often visited with large coffers of gold to pay homage to the Gods. But this was no rich merchant or dignitary laden with offerings or tribute.
Outsiders would find the behavior of these priests to be unusual; no strangers should receive such an extravagant welcome; but these priests knew the stranger was no mere mortal. They had heard tales about the lands far to the East; a land filled with beings of great power. This was such a being.
The heavy oaken door to the main chamber was opened and he entered. The priests closed the door behind him. They knew why he had come; the reason why everyone comes to their temple.
The Oracle.
There, in the very heart of the temple, he glanced up and gazed upon the great statue of the Goddess of Love and Beauty.
Firelight flickered in every corner casting shadows upon the terra cotta walls. Green lush plants surrounded a clear pool; water spouting forth from a metal fountain shaped like a dolphin. Tiny tiles meticulously placed made up the bottom of the pool. Bright and colorful they added a light and airy feel to the room.
The sound of bare feet upon the stone floor caught his attention and he turned slightly; a figure in the darkness slowly coming in to view. A female form clad in diaphanous silks glided across the marble; long hair flowing; skin glowing in the dim firelight.
The Oracle of Aphrodite was a site to behold.
Young and beauteous, she seemed to float on air as she approached the hooded stranger.
“I bid you welcome, good sir,” she said in a dulcet tone.
He bowed to her and spoke; his voice deep and commanding.
“I beg your forgiveness for the lateness of the hour. I have traveled a long distance to seek an audience with you.”
The Oracle smiled to herself. She knew well that this stranger did not have to beg to see her. His arrival and entrance into her presence was as smooth as silk. Many men had to bargain and haggle for days before the priests admitted them.
This one was definitely special.
“What knowledge can I impart to you, sir?”
The girl encircled her visitor in an attempt to unnerve him; but the stranger showed no signs of discomfort.
“It is said you can predict the future and have great knowledge of all things; that the Goddess herself speaks to you in dreams. I want you to speak to her on my behalf. I want you to speak to her now.”
The Oracle stopped before the fountain and dipped a dainty foot into the pool.
“What makes you think that she will answer? You are impertinent sir; the Goddess does not speak with mere mortals.”
As the stranger removed his hooded robe, the Oracle gasped out loud.
“I am no mere mortal,” he told her. “I am a God.”
A shimmering aura surrounded the stranger; an aura that only the Oracle could see.
Though not imposing in height or stature, this God from a far off land held his head high; long raven hair cascading past broad shoulders; dark, exotic eyes, regal nose and full lips adding to his mysterious appearance. Armor of the greatest quality covered fine garments of heavily embroidered silk, the like of which she had never seen. Beasts unknown to her seemed to dance across the expensive fabric as the God moved; his own movements fluid and graceful.
The Oracle was petrified.
“Why would a God need an Oracle? Can’t you speak to Aphrodite yourself?”
The God approached her and she staggered backwards. Body shaking she dared to look deep into his dark, almond eyes.
This was no ordinary God.
“You are cursed!”
A single tear trickled down his cheeks.
She did the unthinkable and touched his face. No one touched a God.
“You must ask her to help me. I’ve come so far. All the others have forsaken me. Only she remains.”
The Oracle stood dumbfounded before him. He wanted to break the curse but the Gods had refused to help him. Only Aphrodite was left.
“What is this curse that plagues you?”
The God fumbled with his armor; slender fingers trembling; unable to unbuckle the leather straps he fell to the floor. The Oracle helped him; almond eyes watching her every move. As the heavy armor hit the floor, the silks followed; the God’s naked form exposed.
In the flickering firelight, the Oracle sat mesmerized by his porcelain beauty. Unlike her own Gods and heroes, this deity was pale and slender. His body was soft and seemed polished like alabaster. He looked as delicate as reeds swaying in the wind.
“My body is my burden,” he told her through ragged breaths. “I am sickly and carry the weight of the world upon my back.”
His eyes fluttered and he slumped forward; the Oracle holding him in her arms.
“There were five of us; brothers. We were so close, but we lost our way; like broken ships upon a storm at sea we have drifted apart. We must find our way back. I need to find the way home to my brothers. I can’t do it on my own. I am too weak.”
He whimpered like a child into her neck; warm lips caressing her throat. She felt her skin prickle with heat as he moaned her name.
“Lia.”
The Oracle shivered.
“How do you know my name?”
The God’s slender fingers tugged at her silken dress.
“It came to me in a dream. It’s a sign. I’ve been to every shrine of every God in the known world trying to find you. You are the one. Speak to her, Lia. She must give you an answer.”
The Oracle gently released the God from her embrace. Staring up at the imposing statue of Aphrodite she outstretched her arms and began an invocation. The chanting lasted for several minutes; the lithe form of the young woman writhing back and forth as the spirit of the Goddess of Love and Beauty communed with her. When it was over, the Oracle wrapped her arms around herself and took a deep breath.
“Aphrodite has spoken. You must follow the constellation of Cassiopeia. Only then can you find your brothers.”
Tears flowed freely from the God’s eyes.
“There is one more thing. Aphrodite has released me from her service. She says I must go with you; keep you safe and warm. She says I must love you, Yoochun.”
The God sighed deeply at the mention of his name; silently he thanked the goddess for answering his prayers.
The Oracle moved in close to him, entwining her fingers in his raven tresses. Her lips touched his and he mewled softly. She pressed him gently to the floor and they embraced. Their bodies became one, arms and legs entangled; skin upon skin as he glided inside her; hips thrusting, backs arching; their soft whispers echoing off the temple walls. Muscle and sinew stretched; her legs wrapped around him and drew him in close. He groaned as her insides constricted around his wide girth; her lithe form shuddering as she reached her plateau. His heart thumped in his chest as he struggled to hold out; to give her as much pleasure as he could. He began to shake as a ripple effect surged through him. Pitching forward he spilled deep and hard within her, collapsing on top of her tiny frame. His heart fluttered for an instant, then regained its cadence. Breathless, with their arms and legs still entwined, the God began to laugh.
“What’s so funny?”
He kissed her and looked up at the statue of Aphrodite.
“We’ve just made love in a sacred temple. Isn’t that blasphemy?”
Lia blushed and buried her head in Yoochun’s chest.
“I think we’ll be forgiven.”
They cuddled together on the floor, Yoochun covering their bodies with his silken robes. He looked up at the likeness of the Goddess and nodded his head before drifting asleep.
High upon her golden throne on Mt Olympus, Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love and Beauty, smiled.
