He strode effortlessly through the crowded streets that night; all eyes staring at the elegant gentleman garbed from head to toe in the finest clothes a man could buy.  Beggars outstretched their hands for a few measly coins. He ignored them; the rabble that infested the streets were no better than rats; vermin to be trampled under foot and exterminated.  A few ladies of the evening tried to seduce him, but they backed away when they were met by his unearthly stare.  Mesmerized for a moment, they soon forgot his presence and went about their merry way.

Hairs on the back of his neck stood up as he sensed he was being followed.  He smiled a wicked grin and continued his determined pace.  No one would keep him from his appointed task.

They came at him swiftly, but he was quicker.  He tripped one with his sword cane and then the other; brute men who were strong, yet clumsy.  They thought to catch him unaware; this fancy gent foolish enough to walk the darkened alleyways alone at night.  But they were mistaken.  This lonely gentleman was no fool, and his sword cane was not the only weapon he carried.

Blood spattered across the brick walls as the thugs fell one by one, their bodies slumping together in a pile on the ground.  He stood breathless over the corpses, fangs extended, blood still dripping onto his lips.  He licked himself clean and staggered backwards.  Drunk from overfeeding, the fine, young gentlemen regained his composure and slowly walked away.

The headlines the next morning would no doubt sensationalize the gruesome murders.  He was tired of being called a monster.  The people of this city should thank him for eliminating members of the criminal element.  He chuckled to himself as he swaggered on, stopping momentarily to light a cigarette.  There was nothing better than a good smoke after a successful feeding.

A shrill whistle and then another went off as the crushers found the corpses.  The fine gentleman extinguished his cigarette and melted into the shadows.  He waited patiently for the excitement to die down.  Satisfied that all was clear, he continued his journey, determined not to let anyone else keep him from his business.

The door to Madame Noelle’s parlor creaked open, ringing a bell.  The room was dimly lit by a candle mounted on a wall sconce.  A small round table covered in a black cloth filled up the tiny room.  He sat upon a wooden chair and waited.  The beaded curtain was parted; a young woman with a strange talisman around her neck entered the room.  A black veil covered her face, adding to her mysterious appearance. The gentleman rose; removing his top hat he bowed to the young woman and then returned to his seat. A deck of cards was shuffled and then placed face up in a special order.  The woman concentrated as each card was revealed.

The fortune teller looked at her customer and lifted her veil.  She stared into his dark eyes which turned blood red, and yet she did not flinch.  She smiled; unaffected by his power.

“Who are you?” he asked her, aggravated that his mesmerization skills did not work on her.

“I am a simple gypsy trying to earn a living sir.”

He sighed; his eyes turning dark again as the woman began to interpret the cards.

“You’ve feasted well tonight, Nosferatu.”

The fine gentleman growled; his fangs extending in anger.

“You are lucky I don’t kill women,” he hissed at the gypsy.

The young fortune teller laughed.

“Kill me, and you will never learn your destiny.  I am no charlatan.  I have real knowledge of the past, present and future.”

The gentlemen sighed and retracted his fangs.

“Tell me what you see.”

Slender, lace covered fingers touched each card of the tarot deck.  The young gentleman listened intently to the gypsy woman’s words.

“You have accumulated a great fortune over the years allowing you to travel and purchase many things.  Elegant clothes, expensive homes, the best horses, the finest ladies…”

The young man shifted in his seat.

“Go on.”

The woman touched another card.

“There are others like you, but you tired of their company.  You left them to strike out on your own.  They are not pleased that you left their coven.”

The young man narrowed his eyes at the gypsy.  She was good.

“They seek to bring you back or destroy you if you refuse.”

The gypsy could sense his uneasiness.

“You fear the repercussions of your former masters.  They will find you, crush you, and bring you to your knees.  The solace you once sought plagues you, and you curse the day you became immortal.”

The fortune teller looked up at her customer, his eyes once more blood red; fangs at their full length ready to tear her asunder.

“The truth angers you?  You’ve come here for answers and I will give them to you. You may not like what I tell you, but you must hear it.  You are lonely, Nosferatu.  You seek companionship.  You wish to escape the yoke of those that made you and discover the bond of eternal friendship.  Whether you like it or not, deep down in your heart you yearn for love.”

The gypsy woman dared to reach across the table and touch his chest.  Her delicate fingers were greeted by the thunderous pounding of his beating heart.

“Undead, indeed,” she said to herself.

The Nosferatu swallowed hard.

“Tell me what I must do.”

The gypsy woman turned over one more card.

“There are two others.  One is made of fire and smoke.  He is hidden within a golden vessel.  You must seek him in the daylight.”

The Nosferatu laughed.

“I can’t go out in the sun, woman.”

“You will go out on this day, despite the danger.  You need this mystical creature; he will lead you to the third.”

The cards were shuffled and stacked together.  The gypsy extended her hand and awaited her payment.

A large pouch of coins was thrown upon the table.

“If you betray me, I will break my oath never to harm women, do I make myself clear, gypsy?”

The fortune teller curtsied and opened the door for the gentleman.  He took her hand and kissed it; his gaze burning into her soul.  She locked the door behind him and breathed a deep sigh of relief.  Her body shivered; she had survived an encounter with the undead.  She thanked God and grasped the trinket at her neck; a powerful talisman of protection against evil.

The fine, young gentleman meandered down the city streets. It would be dawn soon; he must seek the shelter of his lair from the rising sun.  He lit another cigarette and stared at the burning embers.

“A creature of fire and smoke, trapped within a golden vessel.”

As he entered his home, hidden beneath the streets of the city, the Vampire known as Yoochun pondered his next move.
