Sergio was sleeping when his phone rang, and his voice is scratchy and low from sleep when he answers, blinking, trying to get the world to come into focus.
“Mmfg,” he says into the receiver, distantly aware that he isn’t coming up with real words. He checks his watch and groans when he sees that it’s four in the afternoon, knows that he shouldn’t have been sleeping -doesn’t remember falling asleep in the first place-, knows he won’t be able to sleep again tonight.
“Sese. Sergio,” Fernando’s voice is urgent and a little bit desperate and Sergio forces himself to be a little bit more awake, pay a little bit more attention, because this is Fernando, and Fernando never asks for help. Then he wonders if Fernando is drunk. “I’m a- Olalla just- Sese, I have a kid.” Sergio remains perfectly still, trying not to breathe too loudly. He just listens as Fernando takes a huge gulp of air and lets it out in a rush, sounding kind of like a little kid who knows he’s in trouble. “Sese, I don’t know what to do. What do you do with a baby? I don’t know, I don’t know how to feed it or change diapers, oh Dios, it’s crying and crying and Olalla is so happy but it’s so loud, Sergio. I don’t know what to do.”
Sergio opens his mouth to tell Fernando that everything would be okay, that of course he would be a good father, that he would figure out how to change diapers and hold the kid so it didn’t cry, but closes it before he can let the words out. Closes it because Fernando, for all that he was two years older, had always seemed like a child to Sergio- headstrong and determined in a way that one day, experience would take away, that maybe experience already had started to take away, but hopeful and naïve in a way that Sergio hopes Fernando would never lose. Sergio opens his mouth again and he doesn’t plan the words that come out. He doesn’t regret them after he says them, though.
“I don’t know what to do either, Fer,” Sergio said softly.
