summary sergio offers to drive fernando to the airport

“I’ll drive you to the airport if you want,” Sergio offers, afraid to look up, instead busying himself with throwing books off of Nando’s shelves and into boxes. He has a copy of Don Quixote in his hand and he stares at it for a few long moments.
“Olalla,” Fernando says, and Sergio feels his gut constrict.
He looks up now, biting his lip and not quite meeting Fernando’s eyes. He wants so desperately for Fernando to realize that he doesn’t care about Olalla, he never has. He’s only ever cared about Nando, and he wouldn’t have minded if all of Madrid, all of Spain, knew it. He’s only ever pretended to care about Olalla and decorum because of Fernando, because that’s what Fernando wanted, but now Fernando’s leaving, and Sergio will be damned if he isn’t the last person in Spain to see him off.
Fernando’s fingers are long and cool against Sergio’s cheek, and he swallows back bile, not understanding entirely why Fernando’s leaving, glancing back down to the battered copy of Don Quixote and absolutely refuses to think of himself as Sancho Panza, because Fernando is no Don Quixote. This leaving, this journey, it isn’t noble, Sergio thinks. It’s Fer being selfish. Sergio wishes vaguely that he could hate Fernando for this.
He can’t.
Sergio drags his eyes up to Fernando’s and brings his own hand up to cup the striker’s cheek. He traces gentle patters in the boy’s freckles and takes a few shuffling steps closer, dropping the book and reaching his other arm around Fernando’s back. He presses their foreheads together and they stay there for a minute. Sergio almost manages to trick himself into believing that Fernando understands. He kisses the other boy, slowly, deliberately, nothing hurried or rushed, and then pulls back, letting his hands fall. Even if Fernando doesn’t understand, Sergio knows he doesn’t have to explain himself. That’s not how it is with them.
Maybe if that’s how it had been with them, maybe then Fernando wouldn’t be leaving.
“Her too.”
