summary sergio is sick of being injured.
note since i am sick of sergio not training with the team, i decided that he is equally frustrated and i wrote this. with a guest appearance by ruud van nistelrooy!

Sergio wants, more than anything, to be back on the pitch.

He knows he needs to be in the gym, knows he needs to make a full recovery so that this never, ever happens again. Knows his teammates are fine without him, knows they are still winning -spectacularly- and he knows that eventually, he’ll be right back with them, winning with them, holding up trophies with them.

Sergio, he knows all of this, but it doesn’t make things any easier.

He hates spending hours in the gym, he hates everyone always asking him if he’s alright, he hates that he feels like a cripple. Powerless. Can’t even run. But what he hates most of all is that he isn’t out there with his team, isn’t pulling his weight, isn’t fighting for it with them. He feels like he’s letting them down, letting his team down, and there’s nothing he can do about it.

“How did you survive this?” he miserably asks Ruud one day, at the beginning of training. There’s an actual, physical ache in Sergio’s gut as he watches his teammates spill out on to the field as he himself trudges up to the gym.

“One day at a time,” Ruud answers, patting his shoulder before joining the team.

One day at a time, Sergio thinks to himself, is not a lot of help. He could go crazy one day at a time.

“I hate this,” he tells Nando on the phone later. He knows he’s acting like a petulant child, but he can’t quite bring himself to care.

“I know,” Nando replies, and while it may not be any more useful than Ruud’s answer, it’s a lot more satisfying to know that Sergio isn’t the only one who can’t quite bear up.
