Minseok doesn’t remember when was he adopted, he doesn’t remember the friends he made in the orphanage and he only remembers celebrating his third birthday in South Korea through the photos in his album. Minseok knows that he is adopted and he is very okay with that.

At certain nights, after mama Yixing had tucked him to bed and made sure that he had brushed his teeth after drinking his milk, when papa would come home late and mama said that he should sleep and not wait for papa anymore. Minseok would ask Yixing to tell him the story of his adoption instead of the usual sweet lullabies mama Yixing sings for him. Not that he doesn’t like mama’s lullabies of course, he always loves them because mama has something new to present every night, but on certain nights such as this, he wants mama to tell him the story of his adoption.

“I think I’ve told you that story before, Min?” Yixing asks, shifting on Minseok’s small bed so that his other leg is dangling on the edge of the bed while the other is under it as he strokes Minseok’s hair. They lean against the headboard and it paints a beautiful picture of a father putting his son to sleep.

Minseok puffs his cheeks, juts out his lower lip and blinks his cute eyes at mama. “Please mama, tell it again!” He says, bouncing on the bed a little and Yixing can’t help but smile as he calms his child down.

“Alright, I’m going to tell you this again.” Minseok smiles, eyes bright as his night light serves as the only source of light inside the room. Minseok doesn’t like sleeping with the lights off, it scares him and there might be monsters! But he knows Mr. Fluffy (a big teddy bear-almost as big as Minseok, given to him as a birthday gift from his best best friend or technically, Lu Han’s mother for his fifth birthday) will protect him from the night monsters.

“But first, lie down okay.” Yixing tells him and he does as he is told, eager to hear the story of his adoption for the nth time. It just never gets old.

“Papa and I met in Korea, that’s where you came from hence your name, Minseok. Hm, we stayed there for a long time, I guess around six years of our life?” Mama Yixing laughs a little in reminiscing his past with papa and Minseok just hums in response, urging mama to continue. “So, um, since this is the story of your adoption and not the story of me and Papa, I’m gonna skip our parts okay,” Minseok whines in response because-really, he loves hearing the story of how his parents met.

“Augh, alright alright, so Yifan and I met when I was looking for a job, originally, I went to Korea to pursue my dreams of becoming a singer which… was never really successful but that was okay since I met papa. Not reaching my dreams was a blessing in disguise because if I’m a singer in Korea now, I wouldn’t have adopted you nor I would have met papa right? So it’s all good-aw, come on Min, don’t pout like that! This is supposed to be a happy story!

“So, papa was the boss and I was a-um, say, a messenger for his company. My pay wasn’t really big but it was enough to suffice my needs I guess. Then, papa started bothering me on my job? God, he was pesky.” Yixing chuckles. And Minseok can see the glint of happiness in mama’s eyes when talking about papa, or maybe that’s just him and sleep getting to him but he needs to stay awake! Focus, Minseok! Focus!

“Uhh, I guess I got annoyed with papa? I mean-even though he was my boss and even though you are not supposed to talk back to your boss, I talked back to him. I confronted him because-God, he was really annoying. Then that was when he first asked me out, you see-papa is not a very romantic person.”

Minseok blinks, mouth hanging open as mama tells his story. “Mama, what’s a romantic person?” He tries to say the unfamiliar mandarin word and it rolls on his tongue with slight difficulty.

Yixing coughs a little-chokes, even. “That’s um, you don’t need to know, ignore that word Minseokkie, okay proceeding to the story-“ Minseok frowns at his mama not telling him what does the word mean but he listens again anyways. (He’ll ask Lu Han about it. Lu Han knows a lot of words).

“And yeah, papa and I start going out… around two years passed and then he asked me to marry him. That’s why we needed to go back to China, and here in Guangzhou, where papa’s family lives, we decide to get married. It wasn’t a big… big… wedding. Just a wedding with a nice venue, I’ll show you the pictures tomorrow-his mom, my parents and grandparents came, a few friends… yeah.”

“We needed to come back to Korea though, because we only came back to China for that wedding so after around a week we had our flight back in Korea. We lived together for a few years, then one day papa brings up the topic of adoption! This is where you come in, Minseokkie.” Yixing smiles down at him, pats down his hair and strokes it again. Minseok sits up properly now but sinks back into his bed when mama tells him to.

He’s excited of course, this is where the cute little him comes into the scene. “Of course, I was really happy. I worked at home this time, I’m an online writer and it pays a good salary, I write and compose lyrics, send them to companies and then when it gets accepted, it brings a good amount of pay. And papa was already CEO of their company-“ Minseok interrupts to ask what CEO is with huge, curious eyes. Mama has never used this word before.

“It’s the boss. Bosser than the boss.” Minseok replies with an ‘ooh’ and makes a mental note to tell this to Lu Han tomorrow when they play. “Hm, then we drive to the orphanage, talked to the people in charge, showed our marriage certificate and then-we met you! You’re two years old then, they told us your name was Minseok and God, you were so so cute! You first clung to papa, you pinched his cheeks when he carried you and giggled before hugging him. I wish I captured that moment but I was too overwhelmed with the cute so I wasn’t able to.”

Minseok laughs, all teeth and gums with his eyes up into crescents as he pictures himself drooling all over papa. “Did papa get mad? Because I’m sure that I drooled on him.” Yixing lets out a loud laugh at this, crinkling his eyes and throwing his head back (which Minseok knows papa loves because one time, papa had whispered to him about how mama looked so adorable while laughing).

“Well you tend to drool a lot, even now you drool a lot!” Minseok huffs at his mama, pouts and furrows his brows and mama kisses his head. “But papa found it cute when you drooled on his shoulder, so then, we adopted you.”

Minseok smiles, even though this is the ending to his adoption story, it is only the beginning of many more stories. “You celebrated your third birthday with us, only with the both of us but it was really messy. I know you’ve seen the pictures of us with icing covered faces, it was such a mess but it was fun.” Yixing smiles fondly and looks as if he was looking into a far distance. Minseok reaches up, squishes his mama’s cheeks between his small hands and laughs when mama talks like a goldfish, eyebrow raised at Minseok.

“Mama, thank you.” Minseok says in a soft voice. And Yixing melts then.

“No, Min, thank you. Thank you for being such a wonderful child.” Mama leans down to kiss his forehead and pat his cheeks. “Okay, you should go to sleep now. It’s late.”

“Tell papa I said thank you, okay mama?” Minseok says, turns to his side as Yixing stands up from his bed. He takes Mr. Fluffy and hugs him tight. He pulls his covers up to his shoulders as Yixing hums a yes and walks over to the door. “Good night mama.”

Yixing opens the door, facing Minseok and smiles. “Good night, Min.”

***

“Hey, Han, I know a word that you don’t.”

Lu Han pops his gum, glances over at Minseok and kicks a rock. “What is?”

“CEO,”

“Oh, I know that! It’s the highest person in the company right?” Lu Han sneers at his best friend and Minseok pretends to hit him.

“I have to ask you a thing, what’s a romantic?” Minseok asks, his little hands in his pocket as he and Lu Han walk together to the playground.

Lu Han turns to him, stops walking and laughs. “Where’d you hear that word?”

Minseok frowns at his best friend and stops walking too. He faces Lu Han, crosses his arms over his chest and huffs. “From mama, he said papa is not a very romantic person, what’s a romantic, Han?”

“Mmm, well,” Lu Han ponders for a while, looking up at the sky (and Minseok looks up too but there is nothing interesting there!) before he looks back at Minseok. “Romantic is when you give your favourite cookie to the person you like because you want to say that you like them. It’s like making a card and putting heart stickers on it to give it to the person that you like.” Lu Han beams at him before said boy reaches out to place both of his hands on his cheeks.

Oh no.

“One day, I’m gonna show you romantic so you can understand it better!” Lu Han rolls his cheeks in his hands, pinches them a little and just generally squishes his cheeks together before giggling to himself. Minseok doesn’t get what a romantic is and he doesn’t get his best friend either.

“O…kay…” He says, rubbing his right cheek once Lu Han had let go of them. But Lu Han only pries his hand away because he leans in to kiss both of his cheeks, it’s a peck with a loud ‘mwah’.

“There, it won’t hurt anymore! I kissed it!”

That’s what his mama do but it feels weird when Lu Han does it. But Lu Han smiles at him and Minseok smiles back as he lets himself be pushed to the swings.

And Minseok still wants to know what a romantic means.
