Making characters can be fun… Except when you're dependent on others to create a setting and they seem to think it's okay for events to happen in a vacuum.
No person exists in a vacuum. Siblings born to the same parents 10 years apart can physically resemble one another, but they will not have the same view of the parents, the family, or the world, because we are all shaped by the times we live in.
Fictional characters that fail to reflect their environment just won't ring true.
Of course, my favorite is the solution to making a character fit a pre-conceived notion by changing basic science or corporate organization...
All very true, but at the time I made the entry my thinking was more along the line of the (unspecified) area the character is living in effects what kind of jobs are available, cost of housing, climate, local laws, etc.
Ah. Now that I understand the context for this post (should've known where to look by now)...
I can sympathize, for related reasons. Unlike you though, I avoid RPs in general. Except in rare circumstances, I am too much of a control freak to enjoy writing by committee. Allowing others with varying degrees of maturity, talent, foresight, and reliability to determine the direction and populace of a storyline seriously endangers my sanity. And I have precious little of that to spare.
OT: I hold you responsible for irrevocably implanting "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" in my brain. It's been two weeks now. Damn you.
I normally wouldn't have considered it either, but I grew up playing RPG's like D&D and it's been so long since I've been able to find a group to play with that I was desperate enough to think about joining their faux!RP.
Um, sorry about that FM. Hopefully it's not stuck in your mind anymore…
I don't know, but I'm not going to be going back there for awhile, if at all. And if I don't go back by then I'd rather have those things split between you and Zael.
