I've shown restraint and stayed out of the eggnog so far this season...love the stuff, thought...
Speaking of military strategy, were you annoyed, as I was by the way Helm's Deep was presented, a long wall with a thin line of defenders? I found that silly. A wall a fraction of that length, with defenders in many tiers, would have held out of much longer.
I never saw the Lord of the Rings movies, but it doesn't surprise me. Someone went with typical Hollywood bs about what makes "a better visual" or "is more dramatic" rather than think about a fortification's real purpose, surviving attacks.
Wild guess, the defenders mostly used swords and shields during the battle? And the orcs were denied simple siege weapons?
Actually, there was an odd lack of squirrels now that I think about it... Maybe Azlan had the munchies?
Yeah, major squicky point with me, a young boy with no combat experience leading an army because of some prophesy. Would any sane being follow him without being forced into it by author fiat? And what was with the White Witch and her "minotaur general"? Apparently they can't form plans more complicated than "charge!" Ugh...
You might as well, since I have already completed Speaker for the Dead and half of Ender's Shadow. If the degradation of Petra in subsequent sequels is as awful as everyone has forewarned, perhaps these two novels will mark the end of my foray into Orson Scott Card's universe. I suppose spoilers are not really spoilers when one has no intention of actually reading the book.

But, wait, I thought the military leaders of Narnia pretty much *were* baby squirrels? After all, they're led by a pre-teen boy.
