Analysing Advertising!

Totally loving my analysing advertising class! :D It's a huge one (there's like, three other courses aside from my own stuffed into the one lecture hall), but still awesome. We've been discussing the representation of men, women, and sex in advertising the last two weeks - it's seriously interesting, and really insane how some of the ads they've ( Read more... )

Ah, maybe best to avoid her written works then :p Yeah, my lecturer did say she can be quite vehement in her beliefs. Loved her presentation though :D

Unfortunately the majority of my course is more techie-based digital media work, so the more theoretical aspects like advertising and communications studies aren't an option for the final year. I'd totally love to study it more after graduating though :D

Oh, wow.

Yup, that's pretty much the truth. Got into that field while studying Ethics (yup, Ethics-student, uhm... >.>) a few years ago. It was disturbing, really.

I think we also got a bit of Kilbourne. Not the best, but rather interesting.

Oi. Analysing ads? Yer awesome! My father-in-law is the Art-Director of Swedens third biggest/most successful Ads firm and duuude, talking to him is funny. They don't do that kind of stuff, they have bigger companies to work with, etc, but watching ads with him is funny!

XDDD

Oooh, ethics sounds really interesting =D Though yeah, I imagine there'd be some pretty disturbing concepts you'd have to cover in something like that.

One thing I did find slightly iffy with her was how quickly she would brush off the effect of advertising on men. Kind of off-putting =/

Awh, awesomeness! :D Yeah, I imagine watching ads with someone who's used to breaking them down would be pretty fun XD

I'm glad to hear you're having fun!

If you're interested in googling some more about sexualization of children, I remember there was a lot of contention a couple of months ago about an ad campaign in I believe, the French Vogue, which had children model all dolled up sexily for some designer label. Come to think of it, it might even have been the same as from that presentation.

:D *hugs*

It could have been the same one! It really was awful though. Wasn't even like she was wearing kiddie make-up or anything - proper foundation, mascara and lipstick. The whole class very much recoiled in horror >_

Yuck, that is horrible!

Couldn't find a cover photo, but was it maybe this campaign? http://vigilantcitizen.com/latestnews/disturbing-sex-kitten-vogue-photoshoot-featuring-children/

Oh christ... Not the one we saw in the presentation, but just as horrible! Don't know how those magazines get away with this.
