Many of my friends refuse to believe that the stories from veteran tech support workers are true. That large a percentage of the American population couldn't be that stupid. One of my coworkers reminded me of a number of things that one in five Americans believe. For those of you who have ever doubted our tech support stories

Let's not forget: 1 in 5 Americans believe that Barrack Obama is a Muslim.

I don't think it's actually possible to underestimate human stupidity. Remember: by long-run historical standards, most of these people are probably well on the right tail of the bell curve.

I also did look up the NYT article regarding the sun revolving around the earth statistic, as well as the Gallup polls for the others, so don't blame it on lack of fact checking.

This year, I had to explain (to a 13-year-old) that the internet came from somewhere, it did not just exist like water or air. HOW CAN HER PARENTS HAVE NEGLECTED THIS.

Oh, I've had to explain that to a lot of people.
And if they've been hijacking their neighbors wifi, no matter how politely you explain it, they always fill out a customer satisfaction rating which states that you were a rude person who called them a thief.

Yeah. That would be kinda like kids in the farm town that I grew up in not understanding that plants come from seeds.
Then again, I remember in elementary school there was one kid who was still having trouble with the concept that elephants do not live on Alaskan farms.

I think the bare facts are 20% of the population is below average intelligence. I am wondering if those one in fives that think Obama is Muslim, are the same population as the ones you listed.
