[For her part, Ema is not at all happy with the situation she's awoken to. All of her possessions are gone and she's received a letter in the mail instructing her to go murder some boy she's never met. She shouldn't be surprised; it's been awhile since Mayfield has pulled something like this.
The picture of Lana alarms her more than it should. After the Christmas event she has good reason to doubt its credibility, but the possibility that they have Lana remains. Could they be serious about this threat? Should she...?
No. Even if they have Lana, even if she's in danger, Ema can't do this. Lana would never forgive her if she did. Into the garbage the letter goes.
Ema continues her day as usual, going about her nursing business in the hospital. The sudden interruption of her routine by a woman she doesn't recognize throws her, but only slightly.]
Really, this is just the icing on the cake of an unpleasant morning. She hates this town.]
I... I don't know how long you've been here, but you do know that they lie, right? They're threatening my sister, too, but I don't think she's actually here. They've lied to us about other things, why not this, too?
[Something deep inside Ema lurches at the reminder of Lana. Little sister? Memories of everything she sacrificed for Ema's sake, everything she risked just to keep Ema's innocence intact for a little while longer come flooding through her mind. Even if Lana didn't technically kill for Ema's well-being, she did come awfully close.
And that nearly tore the two of them apart.
She doesn't want to die. And she can tell that this woman doesn't really want to kill her.
