Well quite. Much as I hate cars for being noisy, dirty, smelly, polluting and dangerous, the time that I left an hour's leeway and they still managed to make me late for a talk I was giving in a town that's not even 100 miles away from the one where I live was the time I decided to learn to fucking drive.

Gah. Heaven forbid they try to manage supply and demand by adjusting the supply.

What is the point of encouraging people to use public transport when it's cheaper, quicker and easier to drive?

Indeed - they're coming out and admitting it: they want to reduce the demand, which goes against any idea of trying to encourage people to use public transport.

I don't mind if a company in a free market chooses to do this, but it's mad that a company that's granted a monopoly can do this.

The another ridiculous thing with these different charges is that they expect you to know in advance what time you're going to be travelling, and then moan at you if you have the wrong type.
