I don't get it (or, why *is* a contract-free iPhone a good idea?)

Of course, right after I just purchased my iPhone I hear that it is now being offered by AT&T and Apple contract-free, provided you actually spend more money than it would take to otherwise purchase an iPhone "legitimately" and subsequently break your two-year contract (scroll down a bit on the page to see the math ( Read more... )

Install LinuxPhone problem solved?

I have to admit, that iPhone looks like it does some pretty cool stuff. You can even get it for free over here if you sign up with Softbank... but I'm already on Softbank so it'd cost me like $800 to get one. It'd also be pretty tough for me to be a snarky Mac-hater with an iPhone in my pocket.

Even better is now that I've found VOIP software for the iPhone/iPod Touch, I *could* potentially return my iPhone and end my contract (since I am still within the window of its return policy), get a mic for my iPod Touch, and use that as a portable phone. I actually would do just that except that I constantly seem to get phone calls outside of WiFi hotspots.

But it is still a consideration.
