Do you just want your layout striped down to a basic LJ layout?
If so, go the LJ task bar and go "Manage" --> "Customize" If the layout is through S1, select that then hit "Modify Journal." Then scroll down to "Overides:" and delete everything that is there. If the layout is through S2 sleect that then hit "Change." There is a button near the bottom that says "Customize", click that. You can go through there and unselect anything that says "Override default".
If you have your own style for your layout, I don't totally remember how to go about deleting it. I don't have a paid account anymore on dncnkatt, so I can't revive my style and delete it. I beleive that you will see something that says "My Style" or some such in S1 under "Available Styles". Just unselect the "my style" and select one of the normal LJ styles.
Okey day. Instead of using one of the User Styles (which is what appears you are using now), select generator, or one of the other LJ ones. Do that in all of the categories within "Layout Page Style". That should return everything back to a neutral layout and you can start over from there.
Also, I've always had a bar across the top of my LJ page that allowed me to do something else at a moment's notice, find the FAQ's, all that good stuff. Also, on the right side, it had a picture of a goat that kicked his foot if your mouse touched him, & a search box for looking up members.

I don't know. I mean, I left for a week, & when I returned, my page was all functified.
I have to scroll down to see my options, & they are in some sort of high school note-taking, outline format.
I no longer have the options at the top of each entry to edit, add to favorites, etc.
Are you guys telling me that only my journal went bonkers a couple weeks ago???
(I will try all that stuff you said.)
