This is what I enjoyed with my class, using Japanese as a common language to speak with people from other countries.I loved all the intonation and pronunciation quirks too, I'm sure I have them too! In fact I know I do, I often catch myself pronouncing funkilly, usually -o sounds. Does get difficult though when an accent is too thick to penetrate and you can't catch what they're saying at all...but then I had that with old ojiichans too, I'll never forget my mumbling yaoya-san hehe
Where did you study? I'd love to hear about your experiences.
I totally understand about the "o" sounds. I still have trouble lengthening the "o" so I try to pound it into my students' brains that they must lengthen and shorten the sounds.
I'm going to add you as a friend on LJ, if you don't mind :)
