I was actually doing some reflection on this a few days ago, and... I actually do agree with you that the condescension and censorship are... disproportionally assigned. I do not think this was the intention of the people who have ruled against prayer in school, against public displays of the Ten Commandments outside courtrooms, and against holiday displays which were only Christian in nature, though ( ... )

I agree with Brian that the best thing to do is to cease the conversation and blame it on the law. It's the truth, it's something the kids can't refute and it's safe. You could also preface it with "If you'd like to continue this conversation later we can..." and give an alternate time/place that's allowed ( ... )

I know that my only real option is defer the conversation.

This is a rant, and is related to an incident that happened in my class when I wasn't near by the conversation where a student said "Jesus Christ needs to go to hell" and another student very politely asked him to stop talking like that, and first student proceeded to curse him out. The only disciplinary action that's been taken is to tell teachers not to put them together in groups.

I feel pretty certain that if this had been going the other direction a bigger issue would have been made of it.

Do agree with Keely about all the airquote Christians out there. They give the faith as bad a name as any of the 'extremist' denominations do.

I can understand not being able to get into theological discussions in class. I just want others to show the same courtesy I do.

I guess this rant is more aimed at inconsiderate irresponsible people than anything else in the end.

That's tough. I would love to say "that's indicative of a societal problem more than anything else," but it's tough to say. When I was in high school, I was friends with a lot of "fringe" people (the freaks -- I'm old enough that they weren't called goths yet) and just about every popular, Christian kid in school took time out to ridicule them. Since they were considered outsiders, the administration never listened to their complaints (and I was around for a few of the complaints ( ... )

Yeah, I hung out with the freaks too, and the pressure that "Christians" in high school put on was one reason it took me so long to come around.

I didn't post this on facebook for a lot of reasons. I know you guys know me and understand that I'm not REALLY lashing out or generalizing about a group. Just venting.
