A new outfit for my wardrobe ... and not what some might expect.

Long time no post.

I've been busy doing stuff mostly uni but some hobby stuff too..... and here is a little of it.

An all wool Hangarok, apron dress, hand sewn is based on an early Danish find and a dress reconstruction in the Danish National Museum. The under dress is wool based on one of the proposed "Eura dress" reconstruction methods. It is being ( Read more... )

That looks wonderful! I'm still fairly Venice-centric, but AnTir is such and extremely Norse focused kingdom I've broken down and made myself an outfit for Norse-themed events and serving royal retinue when They have Norse persona. Will this be a new focus for you, or just a charming and well done side jaunt? I really enjoyed some of the Roman things I saw of yours as well.

I need to get back into the sewing room myself, as I've been meaning to do a spin off persona that's my own servant (still Italian, same time, just working class) for all the cooking I love to do and to accomodate my upcoming, (at long last after many trials) new roll of mommy! I'm hoping that the front closing version seen in the fish monger's wife, and the fruit seller will keep me through the end of my pregnancy and through breast feeding. :) Have you had any experience with this style, or experinces as a historical mommy you'd care to pass on?

Congratulations on becoming a mum soon. Your life is about to change in ways you cannot comprehend at this time.

I am taking a break from the venetian for a while. I have decided to play in a different time and geography for a while. Change is as good as a holiday they say. I have 6 of what we tend to think of as the classic viking (hangarok) outfits, and 2 Finish outfits at the moment. I am experimenting in what works best and the variations that are possible given the limited information to hand.

I also have 3 roman now.

Look out Neanderthal -- here I come.... lol

I *love* the orange-brown combination!

Is the back of the dress pleated as well as the front?
Which 'Eura' reconstruction did you use? It sort of looks like the standard (extremely hypothetical) one, but without the V-neck? *squints*

Trust me to get all excited about the patterning instead of all the (cool) decoration.

I love orange, and I had the piece of wool in brown that seemed a good weight for the hangarok. Lucky for me they went together really well. It started with the tablet weaving and, well the rest is history as they say ( ... )

Vigdis' pattern is fantastic if you're busty, it just fits and looks really good. :)

I had a theory (before the NESAT article about the Pskov dress) that it might have been backwards and higher in the back instead of the front. I just kept imagining the back turning into this lovely, sweeping train. Certainly that wide panel seems to be more stable when it's bottom corner is the same height as your armpit. Are you finding that it's really stable, too?

I've only worn it the once. but it was very stable, more so than the 'standard' interpretations of the hangarok. Given that the geography we are concerned with gets cold, real cold, so cold that things snap off. The back being higher makes a lot of sense to me.

I have pointed a few people at the dress pattern. It is great for the better endowed amongst us. felt odd when making it that there were no gussets in the armpits... but wow it works beautifully.
