WHO WATCHES THE WATCHMEN? ... I do!

So I just saw Watchmen tonight... spoilers under the cut.

Okay, first of all: I really appreciated all the geek trailers they showed beforehand. Public Enemies (Johnny Depp as a gangster FTW!), Terminator: Salvation, Star Trek, etc. on one movie? Awesome!

Anyway, Watchmen. They were fairly close to the grahic novel. If they were to put in everything as it was in the book, it would've taken twice the amount of time, but even with stuff cut out it pretty much made sense. The change to the ending was the biggest thing... I was sad because I really kind of liked the giant squidlike alien thing, but it wouldn't have made sense without the stories about the missing people and all, so I forgive them.

There was some delicious violence, some not-so-delicious violence, and one reeeeeally awkward sex scene to be watching beside my dad. Really. But the main characters (except for Ozymandias) were spot-on. Rorschach. Was. AWESOME. He was kind of my favorite character in the graphic novel, and the guy they got to play him was SO GOOD. Even with some of his story cut, he was great. And the Comedian was pretty good, too. Just as unlikeable but strangely sympathetic as in the book.

Also, Nite Owl is hotter in the movie than in the book. His costume is way better, and he doesn't have a ponch. But I could've gone without seeing his naked ass several times. And the aforementioned sex scene.

Billy Crudup as Dr. Manhattan was really good. However, also could've gone without seeing his blue penis. At least, sitting beside my dad in the movie theater. It was sort of blurry anyway.

Rorschach's death was sad. =( But! He got made into a rorschach! Ahahahah! Yeah, sorry.

Some of the soundtrack was a little... jarring. Especially the choice of "Hallelujah" for the sex scene. I mean... I know he was impotent before that, but that's going a little far.

All in all: SUPER FANTASTICALLY AWESOME. If depressing. But in a good way.

books, movies, squee!, geekdom
