I have always disliked team sports. never really saw the point of organising events that deliberately foster aggression and competitiveness. But what do you do when a thirteen year old that never really asks for much, says "Alison you never watch me play soccer"? If you start going to his games its about the fact you love him; and nothing to do ( Read more... )

It's OK, you're allowed to like soccer. It's only those other team games that are nasty and horrible. *nod*

(Disclaimer: the fact that I play soccer has in no way influenced my reaction to your post. Honest.)

ahhh, but they also foster teamwork and encoraging others when they think they're too tired to go on.
and if you have a good coach, it's more about that, and being a good sport, a good loser And a good winner than winning or aggression.

(i happen to Love team sports. they're so much more full of all the goos stuff than individual sports. for example, do you think lleyton hewitt would be nearly as obnoxious if he had 10 other people to look at him and go "wha?" when he was stupid?? i don't actually know that that example makes sense, but i'll let it stand =) )

Yeah... i have never been really sure if the "fosters team spirit" thing is actually genuine, I know it's what they always say about team sports...

My experience as a child was that team spirit was something for the good players... as a crap player, I experienced team forced tolerance, team resentment, team verbal abuse, but never team spirit! But watching my flatmates interact with their team members I am seeing something different - any your comment reinforces that.

I did have to google to find out who Lleyton hewitt was though - but yes, i take your point :)

As another non-team sport person, I understand your dislike for them. I also understand the whole supporting your friends thing that can get in the way of healthy dislikes.
As to the crying over the international game last night, I'm sure I have a shrink's number around here somewhere...

I'm not sure how to react. I saw the FIRST goal whilst on break from twirling... and then found out the final result from this very LJ post...

not only did you cry, but you're sharing the patriotic love! You're a carrier now!

*hugs*
