Adornment

Working in pre-school is not good for clothing. I generally come home with something ground or mashed into my clothes; play-dough, yoghurt, glue, paint... something worse occasionally (though you have to go a long way to find a substance more foul than strawberry yoghurt). My little girls love it if I wear clothes that are "pretty", but given both ( Read more... )

It's more about what the media is telling children is right. Have you ever noticed the covers on the magazines geared at primary school aged children? Or watched a children's tv program and the advertising they get bombarded with? Consider Bratz, they're worse than Barbie. It's heartbreaking and depressing a lot of the time. Personally I adore it when my babies are brought into the childcare centre with little girls in blue and the (much rarer) boy in pink (note singular there).

Children want to be loved, they want to be liked, they want to have friends, and everything they're seeing on tv is telling them they need to wear pink or blue and play with dolls or trucks with no stepping outside the lines. Children don't develop the ability to discriminate information like that until they're about 12. What hope do 4 or 8 year olds have?

I sometimes get a bit depressed having to wear 'sensible' clothes to work. I'll occasionally splurge and wear a velvet skirt, and spend the day dodging yoghurt covered fingers. I'm longing for a day when I can get away with wearing my glorious satin and velvet purple dress to work, just for the fun of it, maybe with wings too. I can usually manage to wear something bright, but on days when every other top has snot smeared across the shoulder... *sigh* I'm certainly doing more washing now than I was 3 years ago.

And maybe you figured your efforts would be less likely to go by without comment from your 8 year olds, whereas on a date there's a certain level of awkwardness and being flattered for your clothing may be a little hard to spit out at times. I miss being able to wear fun clothes.
