A couple of months ago I brought a friend from one social group along to the party of a friend from another social group. She left a while later with an extremely bewildered expression... and a new-found interest in corsetry

Yeah, if the shop assistant knows what she's talking about that's fine. Alas, even the ones at Gallery Serpentine don't necessarily know how to fit a corset properly. Fitting is a skill that requires training and fitting corsets is even more specialised.
If I were currently taking orders, I'd pimp my corsets (Cytheria Creations), but I'm up to my ears in 18th century suits at the moment :) I'm not taking new orders for corsets until January.
As for what to look for, you're highly unlikely to find a perfect fit off the rack, but here are some tips:
Style: First decide on overbust or underbust. I prefer overbusts for purely aesthetic reasons, but some first time wearers feel they restrict the rib cage too much. There is a difference in posture and movement that is more noticeable in overbust designs. If you go for an underbust, make sure you can wear a bra with it, because boobs oozing over an underbust just isn't sexy despite what the porn sites would have us believe

I don't think there's anything else that I can add to that! Other than to point out that I live around the corner from Serpentine now, so call if you want coffee.
A corset should be comfortable. If it is uncomfortable it either doesn't fit or isn't laced properly.
Personally I'd recommend House of Fetish on Oxford street over gallery serpentine any day. Don't get me wrong - Gallery Serpentine do some lovely corsets - But I would suggest a Vollers for being the best first corset and they sell them at House of Fetish. They are more expensive and better made than the GS sort and the staff at House of Fetish know how to fit a corset.
The 4cm gap at the back is also important.
But if it doesn't feel comfortable - it isn't the right corset and one will never look good if they don't feel good.
I agree with this. My two corsets are from Gallery Serp (and I love them), but I tried on a Vollers corset from House of Fetish and was really surprised by how much more comfortable it was. I think I'll be going back to buy it soon.
