Bus Conversation

Dec 05, 2006 20:48

I had a conversation on the bus with a Christian bloke today. He seemed a nice enough person, for someone who was the pastor of a group that talks in tongues; and considers drinking orange juice as a form of going against God's will... after all, God made the whole orange and intended for it to be eaten that way ( Read more... )

Does he eat orange peel? What about peach stones? Entire cows?

How about the bus? He should be travelling in the whole earth, not just an extract from it!

They were atheists that believed in good literature.

Ok, that almost made me choke with laughter. Perfectly true, though.

Perfectly true. But hey, it's nice to hear of a Christian who's heard of the King James Version. Always reminds me of the Anglican minister who married us saying doubtfully "Well, I suppose it's legal" when we asked to use the old prayer book version of the wedding ceremony.

Are you coming to Cambridge for an evensong any time soon? :L)

The Book of Common Prayer will be followed, although unfortunately we never get to do any of the bits about giving thanks for the end of bad weather (from memory it begins something like "O Lord, who hast most justly chastised us by thy recent period of intemperate skies...").

(the thing with the L was an accident but I quitedecided I liked it anyway)

Many of these people are surprised when we higher ones not only know there are different versions of the bible, but own and read them. The real fun comes from proving you know the Bible better than he does.

Hey, I don't consider myself a "higher one"! I have a lot of respect for the christians I know who respond thoughtfully and critically to the gospels, some of the most loving, fun and non-judgmental people i know come in this category. Its just the ones who don't that i feel OK about gently poking fun of. :)

As for knowing the bible better... I tend to gravitate toward the pervy bits (love the SOS for instance), but beyond that don't really know where to start. Its so huge.

*hugs*

If God had meant for us to drink orange juice, he would have put vodka in it.

My favour method to annoy Christains such as that is when they start on the Bible as "The Word of God", I counter with: "If it's the Word of God, why does he need a publishing company?".

The orange juice thing is one of the strangest bits I've heard for a while.
Don't know how you would respond to that.

But I do like your attitude and methodoly to the whole situation.
Very clever, so I salute you. :)
