Some nights, when the others sleep, cradled by the rolling ship on the sea, the archaeologist and the shipwright talk.
Their talk is of lost mothers and surrogate fathers. Warships. The hands of man twisted by men's hearts. Knowledge deemed dangerous. That single letter 'D', destroyer and restorer of precious things. Their conversation resembles a skittering circle, each revolution bringing them further or closer to the riddle's center.
Never quite finding the mark, they acknowledge in lowered voices. They were children back then, and children care nothing for politics. Their concern is for mothers and fathers; the way back home.
